SI.com: Vikings should extend Darnold right now
#1
I don't personally subscribe to this thought, but I know some of you on this board do. You'll enjoy this article. But keep in mind the author of this, Conor Orr, bagged on Minnesota for signing Darnold and was one of his biggest detractors. Until now, of course.

To early for this talk imo. Could easily still he a mirage. Whats he going to do when they need him to step up and lead a key drive or a comeback? Im not saying he wont, just want to see it happen a few times before we get crazy and start changing our future plans with JJM.

Agreed. I mention the author because he's a dick. He went from the narrative of 'Darnold sucks' to 'the Vikings are idiots if they don't extend him now'. Just setting the table to at some point to be right about something negative so he can bag on the team. I don't know that I'd say Darnold is a mirage, I just feel he hasn't had any bumpy sledding yet and what will that look like for him. The dude has made plays when needed, drives when necessary and stands tall in the pocket. Tough dude.

You're probably thinking of me? But as I've said a hundred times (to a wall apparently), it's too early to make that decision. I personally subscribe to the thought that if this continues into weeks weeks 12, 13, etc, the Vikings need to have a serious conversation about extending him.

But I disagree with those who say "barring Sam winning a Super Bowl" this team is JJ's. It will have nothing to do with a Super Bowl, nor should it IMO.

Not just you, MB. There's others on the board as well. And I'm not bagging on anyone that feels this way, I hope that's not what is coming across. I just feel differently and what I'm doing by posting that is saying there are others that feel that way as well, validating it more than anything. I think Tom said it best, its a 'Cadillac Problem' to have.

Lol, Cadillac problems get expensive in a damn hurry.

Yeah, too early. As was said, let’s see what happens when adversity hits a couple times.

It will have everything to do with a Super Bowl or some type of MVP experience that he's simply not likely to put up.  Let's say Sam keeps doing what he's doing and the Vikings need $50MM a year to keep him, but you putz out as a playoff team that needs more D.   You give Sam $50MM, you're left with very little to nothing to build up your other weak areas and where you're already one of the oldest teams in the NFL.  You have no RB's, DT's, CB's, etc... You can't have both.  You could mortgage some in terms of spreading money around, but do you want to do that with an already old team?  Doubtful..  If there's a way to make Darnold's contract tradeable after a deep playoff run, there's a very slim chance, but I just don't see it.

If Darnold continues to play well, the Vikings might check in with his agent and see if they'd add 1 more year on his 1-yr 10 million dollar deal. They'd have to guarantee some money this year and next, but maybe Darnold says yes because of that and the coaching staff. That might be ideal to have two legit QBs as we transition to JJ.

I think that is highly doubtful though. If Darnold has a good year, he'll get multi-year offers from someone else. And I don't think the Vikings will be one of them. I'm pretty sure they saw enough from JJ McCarthy this offseason to know they got their guy. If KOC can get this type of play from Darnold, I think he can get the same type of play (or better) from a younger, less scarred, and more physically talented QB on a rookie deal.
