With Billy leaving NE, he is now the longest tenured coach in the NFL, 17 years.
If it were up to me back then? I would have had Chilly hit the road and kept this guy.
Boy time flies.

I remember that discussion. It was the right move but just isnt done in practice. its an earn your stripes league.
Context:
Tomlin inherited a championship-caliber team.
Chilly, who I rarely defend in anything, inherited a team staggering from both Red McCombs and "Love Boat" insanity, who'd just used a #7 draft pick on Troy Williamson.
Not the same.
I like Tomlin, but he's overrated. Lots of playoff disappointment with that organization the last 7+ years, no playoff wins and consistent ass beatings. Inherited a very good team and QB. Lots of excuses for him by the media, first being 'they played hard'.

Also, when Tomlin was brought in as the DC, there were a lot on the board, I think it was still purple thoughts? anyway, there was a lot of discussion that he was not qualified to be a DC.
That said, after the defensive turnaround, there were a few of posters, not sure if they were the same ones, that wanted Chilly fired and Tomlin moved to HC.
Viking fans sure are a Bi-Polar bunch.

He might be overrated in the media but it seems like many Steelers fans have been out on him for years.
I think he’s a very good coach who lacks a good QB. If they find him a QB, Tomlin will have them in the playoffs every year. Oh wait, he already does have them in the playoffs every year. Steeler fans are clowns.

What comes first: the wunderkind coach or the franchise QB? What coach has had an amazing QB and sucked as a HC? Belichick is out in New England because Tom Brady is gone.
Bud Grant's saying continues to ring true: 'what makes a great HC is a patient wife, a loyal dog and a great QB....not necessarily in that order'.

Vikings Defense Tomlin inherited when hired by Childress in 2006:
Darrion Scott LDE
Pat Williams LDT
Kevin Williams RDT
Kenechi Udeze RDE
Ben Leber LLB
Napoleon Harris MLB
EJ Henderson RLB
Antoine Winfield LCB
Fred Smoot RCB
Darren Sharper SS
Dwight Smith FS
with some decent back ups too. Not a bare cupboard for sure. Tomlin inherited Ben Rothlisberger and a STACKED roster in Pittsburgh. Period. Big Ben, Willie Parker, Santonio Holmes, Hines Ward, Heath Miller to name a few on offense and Casey Hampton, James Harrison, James Farrior, Troy Polamalu on defense.
Preface: I'm a big KO fan. I think he's the right guy for the job and I think he'll be here a long time.
HOWEVER
If this upcoming season goes truly pear-shaped as they say, it might be a good thing for us that Tomlin is sticking in Pitt for one more year to finish out his deal. He'd be the first call I'd want the Vikes to make a year from now if he was available and KO was out.
Update, Tomlin expects an extension this off season & will go outside the organization for a new OC…
