Lame Football Observations: Eagles
#1
Sometimes I make errors and I think it is proper to apologize and correct.  I do like the name "lame football observations," and will keep it but it is not attributable to any other poster.
  • Adjustments:  One of the things that confused me was that as the Vikings cycled through left tackles, every time I paid attention to it, it seemed that Oliver was lined up next to O'Neill.  I would have thought that the Vikings would have adjusted to Darrisaw's and then Udoh's absence by having Oliver line up next to the LT.  In a way, I have the same complaint I had about Zimmer and his defense -- the belief that the players can fulfill the requirements of the scheme and that the scheme doesn't need to adjust to the player's limitations.
  • Devonta Smith's TD:   Correct me if you think otherwise, but it looked like a coverage breakdown and not Evan's fault.  If you watch, it looks like Evans expected the safety (H. Smith) to pick-up D. Smith -- you can see Evan's reacting to the this both during the route and then after the touchdown.  Also, compare it to D. Smith's other long catch when Murphy handed off D. Smith to Theo.  To me, looks like the same route combination just on the different side.  Also, does Harrison Smith kind of disappear in this defense?  I kind of expected the "Swiss Army knife" to have a much bigger role and more splash plays this year -- are we seeing the end of the Harry dynasty.  Also, it appears that Theo Jackson has moved Cine down to safety #5.
  • Pace:  Ivan Pace had 61 snaps, Asamoah had 14.  Clearly Pace has displaced Asamoah as the starter.  That being said, the Eagles clearly exploited Pace's run defense deficiencies last night.  Pace picked a lot of wrong gaps last night and got handled by Kelce a lot.  I think the front 3 did a disservice to Pace by not keeping him clean.  That being said, he picked a lot of wrong gaps (IMHO).  Hopefully, with time, Pace will fix this problem.  Likewise, I hope Flores can fix the run defense -- though I am not certain that with this personnel it can be adequately corrected.
  • Drops:  Numerous drops last night and I have to wonder this is because the players think they have to play hero ball to win games such as this.  They are just trying to do too much.  Now Osborn may be trying too hard simply because he is in a contract year and being surpassed by Addison.
  • Running Game:  Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't the only decent running play the one time the Vikes ran outside the tackles?
Thanks for reading my lame football observations!!

Lol. I mean if someone doesn't like what you write, they don't have to read it.

I know I saw Harrison trying an arm tackle on a Swift td and that was not it.

The dropsies seem to go in cycles or have a ripple effect. It's in Osborn's head now. He probably gets another week but definitely want to see more from Addison.

Pace had some rough moments but that is inevitable. Hopefully he learns and adjusts.

The OL is still the OL and it's amazing that Cousins is still upright. It was a hot mess. Tripping over each other, fumbles, getting bulldozed and Cousins getting slammed around like a rag doll. They need quick plays, there is no time for farting around. And I know Cousins needs to hurry up too but he does better when he doesn't have time to overthink himself

Actually, I think I will change the title to all future posts to something like this: "Lame Football Observations: Eagles".  Truth in advertising.

It felt like there was 1 RUN to the outside last night.  And it actually worked.  I am not certain what this offense is, has a lot of talent but not consistent.

The Smith deep ball looked like a pure miscommunication.  Evans is a damn good looking CB for his limited time on the field.  He looked great in the first half in covering and run support.   I really like this group of DBs, they need a DL to keep the pressure up and can be dangerous with the right pressure.

Luke Braun talked a little bit about this and he was
suggesting that in some of our schemes we did not have enough guys for all the
gaps in the OLine, so some guys were have to control 2 gaps, and that when that
job fell onto the ILBs, you’d get this situation where the RB would wait for
the LB to commit to a hole and then he’d run through the other one, while our
DL wasn’t really getting upfield and forcing the issue.

That said, I haven’t verified that, but I found that
interesting.

Quote:It’s only two games, but this team’s lack of discipline is no longer becoming a problem. It is a problem. K.J. Osborn’s drops while the Vikings are trying to fight back into the game, miscommunications between Akayleb Evans and Harrison Smith leaving DeVonta Smith wide open down the field for a 63-yard touchdown. These are only a few examples of things that must be cleaned up with the mini-bye week coming up.

Good post VO-

I have been harping on the running game or lack thereof.  think we need balance to take some pressure off the oline and Kirk.  As far as yesterday, same old story with fumbling and bumbling the football away.  3.5 turnovers per game and we will not make any playoffs that is assured.  KJ Osborn has not been good at all.  I thought the oline looked pretty good yesterday overall.  Kirk is Kirk.  Great if he is kept clean.

Overall, the D has been fine.  I did not like Bflo's swithch to 5 and 6 man boxes in the 2nd half.  We stuck to it and they punched it down our throats in the 3rd and and took over the game.  Thought we should have had more in the box.  Our Dline outside of D hunt is not getting it done.  Phillips is fine but no one else is flashing and/or are getting beat.  Pace has been disruptive but his lack of size hurt us in the run game, philly can do that to alot of people though.  Harrison Smith has not been good this year. Read that again.  Pretty sad that Theo Jackson is better than Cine at this point.  Only thing I can think of is that he is slow with the playbook, because his traits seem fine for the NFL.

Coaching has been ok.  Game management is fine imo and a big improvement, best since Bud Grant.  We can get back to winning most games if we quit turning it over and clean up the blown coverages.

My apologies to Savannah, he was undeserving of that brush stroke -- though I do like the name of the thread and will use it going forward.  He is correct that he was not referencing me.

Good stuff, VO.

I think you're being a little hard on Pace. Even veteran LBs pick the wrong gap a half dozen times a game. Still....87.2 PFF grade, 90.8 pass rush grade, 9 tackles, 3 pressures says a lot. Does he have things to work on? Of course. But his pass rush grade is the highest in the NFL. Not among UDFAs, not among rookies, but the highest in the NFL.

I think you're exactly right on Harrison Smith. I think the edge of his cliff showed up in frame the 2nd half of last season. It's a damn shame too. Vikings finally get a DC who can take advantage of what Smith is good at, only to find that he's no longer good at it.
