Lots of kudos getting this kid signed to a UDFA contract, but he'll take some seasoning and to build a NFL body. As mentioned in the prospect profile above, probably won't recognize the guy in 2-3 years when the Vikings NFL strength team gets ahold of him. Only 11 reps on the bench press, but he's long limbed. Harder to push the bench weight with long levers, but he's got lots of room to get stronger.
Unsure that they could stash him on the PS this season. Wouldn't want to take the chance on another team claiming him. Might have to add him to the roster & make him inactive every game,

Vikings gave him a $300K guarantee and a $40K bonus, one of the largest UDFA contracts in history, and about 4X what many 6th and 7th rounders will be getting, so I think they expect him to make the 53.

why would they do that? Why not draft him if they like him that much?
Carter is interesting. I remember coming into the year all the talk was he was going to be Army's first 1st round pick since what, Staubach? 15.5 sacks in 2021. Production dropped substantially last season and he was banged up. I'm not sure what the Army commitment is currently. I'm assuming he would be available for training camp, but not sure. His frame is outstanding and he will get bigger and stronger with an NFL SC program. Lots of potential and I am surprised he went undrafted

It's a way of getting another 7th round pick since we didn't have a lot of picks this year. 7th rounders typically sign a 4 year contract in the $3.9M per year range. Rookie minimum in $650k per year plus about $100k bonus. This kind of meets him halfway. I expect he's on PS this year bulking up and will battle for a roster spot this year.

I think when teams get to the 6th and 7th round, there's not a lot of difference between the players who are taken there and players who will be available after the draft. So I think sometimes teams will draft a guy they're not confident they can sign post-draft ahead of those they do feel confident about. Obviously, drafted players don't have a choice where they go, but UDFAs can sign anywhere.

I'm not certain but think he is allowed an exemption to allow him to pursue a professional career and delay his army commitment until after his playing days are over.
I remember my first monthly paycheck when I was in the Army. It was for $325.00.

The omnibus bill passed just this past December allowed military academy graduates to defer their service.
