So he's 29 years old now, 7 nfl seasons and was drafted back in 15...

Where the hell does the time go?

Had a rough ride with injuries. Got his bag o' money when he signed with the Bengals, so he should be good. SHOULD as you never know with professional athletes.

Most of the angst from fans around being GM is centered on their drafts but that is only a part of the overall job.

Hiring other player personnel/executives/scouts...and managing them.  
Knowing when to resign your FA's or when not too
Knowing when to go after other teams FA's and not overpaying
Knowing when to trade a current player or when to trade for a player
Knowing how to maneuver around the draft board for value
Knowing salary cap ramifications
Knowing when to fire your HC
etc......   
It's an extensive list of responsibilities no doubt.

Overall, Spelly was easily a TOP 10 GM over his "long" tenure and he will be given another opportunity in short order.


Going back to Waynes...he was easily part of Spelly's best draft that included him, Kendricks, Hunter, Diggs all excellent decisions.  
Not pursuing resigning Waynes as a FA was the right decision.
Trading disgruntled Diggs for good value (then selected JJ) was the right decision just like Harvin years before. 
Sticking with Kendricks and Hunter until his end was also the right decision.
Sticking with his first HC hire too long was the wrong decision that cost him his job in the end - IMO.

Not drafting more QB prospects was his ultimate failure.  Trying to protect the psyche of Ponder, Teddy, whomever... whatever his rational caused the Bradford trade, the Cousins signing and ultimately the failure of the team.  I like cousins, he should be able to do the job, but at what cost?

Oh and his blindspot for the offensive line until it was too late also was a huge problem.
