PA sounds the alarm on Cousins
#1
This is Kirk's chance. Maybe his last REAL chance to prove all of his detractors wrong. That all of those top accuracy stats and clean pocket ratings bode very well for a QB with an improved line, top 5 weapons and a rebuilt defense. But not only has he put the team's fortunes at risk by refusing to get vaccinated, he's apparently not looking good in camp either...and PA is concerned. Now, I will say training camp performance doesn't typically mean a whole lot, but this team absolutely cannot start out like it did last year. So, given PA's access and tendency toward cheerleading, color me a bit concerned as well....

Paul Allen has become nearly as synonymous with the Minnesota Vikings as the color purple. The long-time play-by-play announcer and KFAN radio host is the primary source of information for many fans. Yet, Allen is nowhere near a hot-take artist. In fact, he is the opposite. When fans are up in arms arguing about divisive topics, you can usually find Allen playing the middle.

For this exact reason, when Allen develops a strong or repetitive stance, it’s all the more reason to take it seriously.
For the past few weeks, that is exactly what he’s done. He has quietly and continuously sounded the silent alarm about how Kirk Cousins has looked this off-season.
On Tuesday’s episode of his popular 9 to Noon show, Allen once again repeated his thought process in a discussion with guest Gabe Henderson about playing time during the third preseason game.
Allen said:
I’m tired of saying this over and over, but I think it bears repeating because he’s the quarterback. He’s super accurate, he’s an incredibly important piece to this equation. But Cousins, just from what I’ve seen, has not consistently lit things up in the off-season like the previous three off-seasons. Then he gets in the game, and we’ve got three drives, and I didn’t think it was anything special.
… For my taste, it’s just not clicking play after play after play after play with this quarterback.
This is the exact sentiment he has expressed repeatedly for weeks. While the media was freaking out about whether or not Kirk was vaccinated, Allen was concerned about his readiness and performance. While the whole town worries about the backup quarterback position, Allen is worrying about Kirk’s approach.
Of all the disaster scenarios that have circulated since the end of last season, this is the one that hasn’t really been discussed. What if Kirk starts this season as he did last year? What if he throws an endless amount of important interceptions through the first six games and the Vikings can’t recover?
With all the one-year contracts and a coach and GM’s future hanging in the balance, this team was built to have a big year. It certainly can’t do that if the quarterback isn’t in the right place to start the season. And honestly, it’s hard to imagine how he could be.
Cousins is one of the most tightly wound people in the entire NFL. He comically watched every play of his entire NFL career this off-season and then talked to the media about it as though that was a good thing. This is a man who thinks and then overthinks and then overthinks his overthinking. When you add in the COVID situation, a rookie draft pick, and the increased pressure of a way better roster ready to win now, I can’t imagine Kirk’s head is exactly where it needs to be. But he better get it there soon. He likely won’t appear in the final preseason game and the opening stretch of the season is brutal.
It’s important to point out that Allen is not attacking or criticizing Kirk. He’s not saying that he won’t have a good season. He’s just expressing a concern that no one else in town seems to be. And given his access, he’s likely right to do so. For the sake of all Vikings fans, let’s hope this alarm is something Kirk can easily turn off when he steps on the field in Week 1.

Well another year and another OC isn't going to help IMO.  Perhaps we need to look at the offense as part of the issue for his slow start last year and now this preseason.  Not saying Kirk doesn't have issues when the game plan starts slow, but PA is the mouthpiece of the Vikings, so he is saying what the Vikings brass wants said.

Expectations are about as high as they can get. I don't particularly find it comical that he rewatched his every throw, but an indication that he wants to improve. Table is set for him. This D won't be giving up 30+ a game.

I am not going to have high expectations because even though there is a talented roster, there are so many things that need to fall into place for Cousins. We'll see if we are celebrating in January or pissed off before then.

Shrug, seems to me that the offense has always struggled in preseason during the zimmer years...  Lots of turnover in the OC position and QB's during that time period.  Yes, Cousins needs to play well in early games, a given.  All we can do as fans is hope for the best and don't be too surprised if the results are something less...  :p

I imagine our offense following a story arc like it did last
year, struggling early then putting it together for the last 2/3s of the season,
seems like the most likely scenario to me.
I don’t really put this on Cousins anymore than I already put stuff on
Cousins, but more on the coaching staff.
I think Zimmer is probably all in on fixing his defense and our rookie
OC still has a bunch to learn about being an OC. I know it’s his dad and he’s a
phone call away, but I would feel a little bit better if they retained Kubiak
the Elder as an advisor and he could be on site for some number of hours a week
as needed.  I think there’s just going to
be a bunch of things he’s going to have to learn the hard way since we don’t
really have coaching mentors on the offensive side of the ball.

This part is conjecture by the writer of the piece but it’s a fair worry based on PA’s comments, plus the narrative and the results of Kirk’s entire career.

I posted in a thread yesterday that I think Zim’s seat is hot, but “Rick is safe regardless”. Maybe I should amend that: If for whatever reason Kirk is downright awful this season (something I do NOT expect) and makes himself untradable, the albatross extension Rick gave him is going to be hard to justify come March 2022 when casual fans realize, “wait… Kirk’s here for another guaranteed year?! For HOW much?!”

Let’s hope none of that comes to pass or I’m gonna need a bigger beer budget.

Yeah, I don't necessarily disagree. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.
