So you can't say the word 'gypsy' now??
#1
I guess I'm late to the game here on this word.....ok, so there are 7.9 billion people in the world. There are roughly 12 million Romani (gypsies) on earth. That is 0.14% of the world's population. And they are going to change the name of the Gypsy Moth because its....derogatory.

You can't say lots of stuff anymore that doesn't make sense.  Why stop at gypsies?

I remember some on here being mocked when all this shit got rolling for saying it would get out of hand.  We were told that common sense would kick in,  but apparently that was erroneously assuming those behind all this cancel culture BS possessed common sense.

It's the Entomological Society of America changing the species Lymantria dispar's common name, it's what the ESA does, name insects.  You can still call it the Gypsy Moth if you like, the Entomologist community will no longer refer to it as such, another insect the Gypsy Ant, Aphaenogaster araneoides is also being renamed.   The term Gypsies or Gypsy  is considered a pejorative by the Roma community, and neither insect had any tie to the community, the insects were named that that because they are invasive species and are serious pests.  Guess it not politically correct to try and not be offensive when you get a chance.

“Slave-maker ants” - still the common term for Formica sanguinea. I don’t know how the folks at ESA sleep at night.

I don't know about 'getting out of hand', but is it silly? Yep. It doesn't impact me one iota, so I really don't care. But I will call it out as a bit of an eye roll.
