June 1: It's payday
#1
Rudy's money ($7.9M) goes off the books today, giving the Vikings roughly $14M in cap space. Should we go shopping, use it to extend Harry and Hunter, or save it until camp cut-downs?

I think i put half in Harry and the other half in some immediate help. Either 3T (Atkins?) or DE or another corner. Harry is at the age where he could fall off a cliff any year now. I don't want a lot of dead money on his cap when that happens.

Hunter's different. He's only 26 so you don't feel bad about putting money into future years. Hell, Vikings could give him a $150M contract and still lower his 2021 cap hit.

Addressing the Hunter issue should be priority number one...Get that guy into camp...

Atkins and Dede (or Fitz) would be a nice combo.  Add another pass rusher and another trust worthy weapon for Kirk.

WR group is strong: Jet, Adam, Dede/Fitz, then Bibi, ISM, and a battle for #6
DL group is very strong, especially having three potential studs at DT.  Pierce, Tomlinson, Atkins plus Hunter is going to make the other DE's job much easier.  I expect that someone will emerge out of Weatherly, Wonnum, or the rookies and this DL will be top 5 in the league by year end.

A Danielle extension is a no brainer, a risk worth willing to take.

Have to extend DH, especially if they believe he's ok physically. Im good with a Harry re-deux if it helps the $ situation overall.

I still think they could use a corner and I'm not convinced they have 3t (for pass rushing purposes) manned well.

I can see inside pass-rusher being a real priority next draft.

when out DT situation is working,  as it should be with Pierce and Tomlinson,  we have gotten good/great results with kicking a DE inside in pass rush situations so I think we are likely OK there,   DB would be a good use of funds though IMO.

so would he,  so would we all since that is what we have been waiting for since he was drafted.... since hes only on 15 for his 7 year career I think I would be tickled with 5 which would be a new career high.

I just want him to stay healthy. With him entering free agency after this season I would hope he has a career year since he's chasing that bag. If he's healthy then I think 5 sacks is realistic.

I dont think it is,  he has played behind as good or better DLines in his career and was only able to put up 4 once,  I dont think him chasing dollar bills will motivate him to suddenly get better at fighting off blocks to finish his blitzes.   IMO his pass rush abilities are grossly over rated so I would be shocked to see him get 5.  basically it seems to me that if he doesnt get a free run to where he can use his speed to get to the QB,  he doesnt get home.

Why the Vikings' cap space is about to increaseTight end Kyle Rudolph was the first in a wave of Vikings cost-cutting moves in March, but the team designated him a "post-June 1" release. Here's what that means.

When the Vikings started a wave of cost-cutting moves in March, the front office gave its first and most prominent release — tight end Kyle Rudolph — a designation that would save them additional money on the 2021 books, but not until Wednesday.

As of Tuesday, the Vikings have about $6.1 million in space for this season, according to NFLPA records. That'll jump to roughly $14 million on Wednesday, thanks to the post-June 1 designation that boosted the team's immediate gain for cutting Rudolph from $5 million to $7.9 million.

Wednesday is an important financial date across the NFL, as any releases or trades done after June 1 allow teams to spread remaining prorated signing bonus charges over two years. Cuts or trades before Wednesday mean those prorated charges accelerate onto the current year.
By designating Rudolph a post-June 1 release, the Vikings pushed $2.9 million of their remaining commitments to him onto the 2022 salary cap. NFL rules allow teams two such designations every year.
Where's the money going? The Vikings still have four unsigned draft picks in third-round quarterback Kellen Mond, third-round linebacker Chazz Surratt, third-round guard Wyatt Davis, and third-round defensive end Patrick Jones II. They'll eat up some space.
General manager Rick Spielman said in May the team could also add a veteran free agent or two, and they recently hosted ex-Chiefs corner Bashaud Breeland in Eagan last month. The Vikings have three open spots on the 90-man offseason roster.
The team also has a handful of veterans due for new contracts, including two entering contract years in right tackle Brian O'Neill and safety Harrison Smith. Perhaps they may also consider redoing Danielle Hunter's contract, as he's working out on his own seven months removed from neck surgery and has outperformed a current deal that ranks him as the 17th-highest paid edge rusher in football.
