NDSU To Have Second Pro Day

NDSU’s Lance 2nd top QB to set 2nd pro day … Literally just hours after Ohio State QB Justin Fields confirmed that he would be attending a 2nd Buckeyes’ pro day on April 14th, Trey Lance of North Dakota State indicated that he’ll also be participating in his programs second pro day on April 19th. One of the interesting questions with both scheduled workouts in which teams will be out in force. Sources are saying, for example, that San Francisco G.M. John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan are expected to attend at least Lance’s pro day workout. The 49ers did not attend Lance’s first pro day because it was before they had traded up from the 12th to the 3rd picks with Miami. And the fact that Shanahan and Lynch will be at Lance’s workout suggests that just may Alabama’s Mac Jones to the 49ers with the third pick may not be a done deal. 
That’ of course, has been the widely held belief around the league since the 49ers acquired the 3rd pick; however, observers around the league remain skeptical that the 49ers would have traded away three first round picks in order to move up to take Jones who most analysts consider to be more of a game manager type who is only the 4th or 5th best QB prospect this year and who likely could have been had with much less.
At the same time, there was an interesting piece by Falcons’ beat writer Orlando Ledbetter in the Atlanta papers today (we’d link but it’s by subscription only) indicating that G.M. Terry Fontenot and head coach Arthur Smith are ‘in sync’ re their plans for the 4th pick overall this year. There had been reports that Fontenot wanted to take Trey Lance to replace Matt Ryan, but that Smith preferred to stick with Ryan, who is coming off a very productive season, for at least a couple of more seasons, and take Florida TE Kyle Pitts at #4. 
Unfortunately, the report didn’t indicate who had won the debate so we may have to wait until April 29th. We aren’t totally convinced, though, that this information isn’t mostly P.R. and that the Falcons in fact are still discussing their options at #4. Indeed, it was just yesterday that there were reports that the Falcons were open to trading the pick. However, it does not appear as if Justin Fields, a Georgia-native, is part of the Falcons’ discussion. Time will tell.

  49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch will attend Justin Fields' second pro day on Wednesday and Trey Lance's pro day next Monday. The Niners continue their game of eight-dimensional chess in the lead-up to the NFL Draft. NBC Sports' Peter King said Monday that Lynch and Shanahan are intent on "fact finding" in the weeks before the draft. It's hard to imagine how many more facts there are to find about the draft's top QBs. Widely expected to take Alabama's Mac Jones after obtaining the No. 3 pick, Shanahan and Lynch are committed to erecting as many smoke screens as possible. If the Niners pass on Fields with the third pick, he's almost assuredly going to be selected in the top-10. Fields and Lance, both dual threat quarterbacks, have far more fantasy appeal than Jones.

Be interesting to see what happens if Lance and Fields knock it out of the park. Will Shanahan stick to his guns and take Jones? Or will a good pro day sway him to change his mind? Can't help but remember JaMarcus Russell and Johnny Manziel had probably two of the best pro days of the last 20 years.

I think you can add Zack Wilson's pro day to that list although I am positive Wilson will not be a bust like them.  Russel was known to be lazy and Manziel a headcase/drugs.  Wilson is none of that.  Barring injury Wilson is the real deal - IMHO.

TREY LANCEQB, NORTH DAKOTA STATE BISON

The Athletic's Michael Lombardi believes the Washington Football Team will be willing to trade up for North Dakota State QB Trey Lance.Lombardi -- who claims that he "knows" that WFT is all in on Lance -- writes of Washington's potential interest, "I think they're willing to go get him." Sitting at pick No. 19, any trade into the top five picks by the Football Team would almost certainly require future draft equity. And probably a lot of it. The most logical trading partner, here, would be the Falcons. Atlanta owns the No. 4 selection and could get a boatload for trading down. They hold real leverage in this situation, not only because that No. 4 pick is valuable in-and-of itself, but also because Atlanta could well use it on a quarterback in their own right.

All these teams getting boatloads for QBs.  Sometimes I wish we would have continued to slide this season.  Some of these teams who receive all this draft capital are setting themselves up nicely.  Its one thing to trade for a known NFL player.  Its another to trade for the unknowns in the draft where even the best of the best can bust.
