Given that DBs are Zimmer's specialty, this guy has similar philosophies and/or brings something new to our embattled secondary....

Surtain's an excellent corner - however far too many holes on this team to select another corner in the first. Really hope they don't bring Jobe or Wright (if he came out) on board.

If we draft Surtain, I think Gladney moves to safety and Mike Hughes plays the nickel. Gladney is physical run defender and could actually be an upgrade over A. Harris at safety. 

I'm ok with Surtain if the Vikings are willing to move up to fill OL and DL holes. The Vikings would need to be very aggressive after that pick to land a couple more impact players.

Surtain is constantly ranked higher on most draft boards over Rousseau, Paye, Slater, Darrisaw, Alijah Vera Tucker, and Barmore... so I think he would certainly represent best player available if he fell to the Vikings.

I think Hughes needs to prove he can even make the team and stay on the field first. He is trending bust right now.

If Minnesota drafts a corner, Gladney stays at nickel and Hughes gets his walking papers...

Hughes tore an ACL in his rookie year... fractured his neck at the end of his second year... a covid 1-5 start and re-aggravation to the neck ended his 3rd year (were the vikings being cautious with him). Year four is a contract year for him and I think he will be out on the field. When he is healthy and playing, he is in the mix as one of our top 3 corners. Can't call him a bust or cut him for any reason other than the health issues.

I am trying to be optimistic here. I think we need a healthy Hughes,Hunter and Barr in 2021 if Zim and the Vikings want to turn this defense around quickly. I believe the Vikings are a playoff team with a healthy, Hunter, Hughes, Barr and add Pierce to the mix.

Without them (and Wilson/Harris/Odenigbo moving on to FA), I'm afraid the holes are too numerous to fix (in 1 offseason) with a bunch of late round rookies.

All I can do is hope for healthy inspired play out of the 2021 Vikings defense.

I had an awful lot of hope for Hughes early on...some of these guys are just snake-bit once they hit the league. Hughes' maladies weren't tonsilittis or ear infections, it's pretty serious stuff. His return would be a bonus and damn near miracle.
