OT: Parenting or lack thereof
#1
Was reading an article about how college education and the over-priced, under delivering model that they now use could be overhauled because of the pandemic. That's another topic, but in the article, a NYU professor was talking about kids today and what he's seeing. Here's one quote:
"I tell them it’s a great year to take a gap year. I think most 18-year-olds are not prepared for college. A combination of helicopter parenting and social media have stunted and arrested the development of America’s youth. University administrators have unwittingly become mental-health counselors." - Scott Galloway, NYU School of Business

With all the high school kids distance learning, what's been happening is that parents are doing their kid's homework for them and other wide-spread cheating. WTF are parents doing today?? This is such bullshit. Here's another example: friends of my wife and I have an 18 year old daughter. She wanted some help with her college essay and texted me to see if I could help. I said sure, send me over a rough draft and I'll look it over and give some advice/recommendations. So she doesn't respond. Turns out she wanted me to do the whole thing for her, lol. SMH. Mommy and Daddy paid somebody online to do it for her shortly after that. She let it slip one time and her Mom turned red with embarrassment. Just gross.

I agree with his sentiment,  but its hardly anything new or virus created  IMO.

i tend to think a lot of it started with cell phones... mommy and daddy can track their precious to see where they are at all times,  they can follow them on social media... and in turn kids can communicate without ever actually having to learn to talk to people,  i am not one that is going to say my generation wasnt fucked up by my parents standards,  but I do think we are trending in a bad way when it comes to how our youth are being prepared for the real world.... or maybe we will all just become nonspeaking nonworking, unskilled,  antisocial blobs like some kids movie I saw a few years ago.

No, I may not have explained that very well: the article was actually more about the high cost of college education today and the kids thing was a sidebar. Didn't mean to imply that bad parenting was a byproduct of the virus, its been around awhile for sure.

With tuition costs going up each and every year as university admins cry and wring their hands at each legislative session while university endowments become more and more bloated every year.  The 1,375 public and private nonprofit four-year institutions reported a total of $475 billion in endowment assets at the end of 2015/16—an average of $346 million per institution!  Harvard alone has an endowment fund of over $41 billion and was recently referred to as a "hedge fund posing as a university."

My hope is that distance/online courses by smaller colleges reset the model for higher education.  Get per credit hour costs and increases back in check with other family expenditures.  And stop paying these "tenured" professors, who never actually teach a student, six figure incomes.  If they want to publish research, let university endowments and philanthropy pick up the tab.

LOL,  well I think my position on the  cost of post secondary education in America is pretty well known.  I would be giddy to see some state schools get knocked on their ass a bit as a reminder of why they were created in the first place.

Terrible.  I teach a class of 18 year olds at a private 4 year college.  They are good kids and I enjoy them.  But there are inherent problems.  For the most part they have been trained already to value the grade over learning.  “How much of this quiz will count toward my final grade? Will this be on the final? Etc.  they get confused when I ask for their own personal response to something they have seen or read. They want to parrot back the received wisdom of a text.  If you can break through that they will reveal themselves to be bright thoughtful kids. It the societal pressure that they are responding to. Sad.

Too much area to make a general statement about, but here's my generalization anyway, its all about parent modeling.  I am the first in my family to get a college degree, my wife is a second generation STEM PHD.  She led me, by example, through my masters program, my son is a PHD, both of my other children have advanced degrees and are not done yet.  My wife was the one that showed them, and myself, its all about effort and work, not just natural ability and external accolades, that's what gets you where you end up.

30 years teaching high school a lot has changed, it's not just one thing, it's many.

Yes, cell phones put the answers in the palms of students hands immediately, no need to go to the library and research any more.  Persistence & Patience is non-existent, kids simply look for the answer instead of reading the content.  Kids look for the short cuts to every assignment.  We have "Photo math" where kids can take a picture of the problem on their cell phone and the answer pops up.  Kids compete & brag for the highest GPA or the highest SAT score, because competition is more important than cooperation I guess. Their grades are all online, and they start emailing teachers for explanations before we can even get the next class assignments scored and recorded.

Yes, helicopter parents are an issue, they have to put on Facebook every little accolade their kid gets.  They have to "Keep up with the Jonses" I guess about how great their kids are. This is fostered by the schools awarding / celebrating mediocrity, where everyone gets a trophy.  My son knew he was going to be "student of the month" in June, because every other kid in the class had already been given the award.  Do Kindergarten kids REALLY need a "Cap & Gown" ceremony? 6th graders? 8th graders? Does a football team that goes 1 & 9 really need to give all their players trophies?  When I screwed up at school and got in trouble..I was wrong and punished by my folks.....NOW, When a kid screws up, the teacher is to blame, "They are "picking on my kid"

High schools have channeled EVERY student on a pre-collegiate course of study....I guess we don't need auto mechanics, plumbers, electricians, welders, farmers or other trade craftsmen any more.  They're all going to college to be doctors / lawyers and enter the world of Fortune 500 companies.

Teachers who have tenure that should be GONE, turn on the "Panda cam" at the San Diego Zoo for math class, and Admin. is hapless to do anything for fear of the union backlash. (My sons 5th grade math teacher)

At the start of every school year, I tell my students I have ONE rule in my classroom. "The Golden Rule"
I ask how many know what the golden rule is.....I  may get three kids out of 200 that know to "treat others the way you want to be treated".  and THAT my friends is truly sad.

Honestly, we've become a nation of pussies, we'd rather protest, than take a stand....and we have no one to blame but ourselves.
