This frees up almost $14 million in cap space. Had to happen. Doesn't mean he might not come back, but not at that cost.

smart move for Griff,  he hits the market now, while it is still flush with cash and every team is a potential landing spot.  Once other teams start to re work their own pending free agents or free agency opens that cash will dry up.  he can still work the market and come back to the Vikes with a chance to keep him here,  but I have a feeling we have seen the last of Ev in Viking purple.

Is there any dead cap if he voids his contract?  That wouldn't seem quite right.

The Vikings were projected to be more than $10 million over the cap at the start of the 2020 league year; Griffen’s decision clears $13.9 million of cap space, with $800,000 of dead money remaining on the Vikings’ books. He will be 33 in December, and though the team could have interest in bringing him back on a smaller deal, Griffen figures to have options after a resurgent 2019 season.
The day after the team’s 27-10 loss to the 49ers in the NFC divisional playoffs, Griffen said, “I want to be a Viking for life, but it’s a business, so we’ll figure that out when the time gets here."

At least he opted out and didn't force the Vikings to cut him.  He wasn't playing for us in 2020 at that number.  This may leave the door open for the two sides to see what his value is on the open market and let the Vikings decide if that is in line with their contract numbers or not.

I would love to see Everson back, but I have a feeling he won't be. This reminds me a lot of when Jared Allen was getting older and had a high cap number in the final year of his contract.  The Vikings moved on and re-signed a promising, young backup (Everson) to be their starter at RDE.  This time it might be Weatherly (or Odenigbo) taking over a starting spot.

Did he void it in order to test the market, or did he void it to help the team that took a chance on him coming out of college, then stood by him while he worked out some mental health issues?

Good question and time will tell...

I dont know what any of the Cali teams cap situations are, but I could see him wrapping the career on the West Coast...

EG in a bright green uni wouldn't surprise me.
