This is why Sloter is still 3rd string
#31
Every year fans are having wet dreams in August about some camp hero and every year come September that guy is either cut or buried deep on the roster never to see the field in a regular season game.   Sloter should count himself lucky if he keeps getting a paycheck this year.   But there is doubtless a space in the Third String Training Camp HOF for him, wherever that is.

It took awhile, but Brad Johnson went from the scout team QB to a SB Champ.  If Sloter keeps playing well, it's a good bet he's going to make the team.  I don't think they'd let him go only to have him get nabbed then possibly flourish for another team.

Zimmer's spiel sounds good, but it doesn't explain away one big thing: why he won't let Sloter have any reps vs. the #2's.  Is he afraid Sloter would continue to look better than his predetermined "winner"?  And how is Sloter supposed to get better if he never gets to see better competition?

Yes, it was against 3's, but Sloter has totally outperformed 2 different #2 QB's in a total of 6 preseason games.  A coach interested in actual competition would give the guy lighting up 3's a chance to prove himself.  But not Zimmer.  Sloter's been tossed in the dungeon and the key thrown away.
Totally agree RS.   I am not saying Sloter is the only answer if we decide to move on from Cousins, but...
What would be the fallout if this team needs to move on from Cousins? I think it's so unimaginable to the GM and HC that they won't imagine it.
the head coach and GM will no longer be with the team should they decide to move on from Cousins.

Agreed. This is a big year for the Vikings in a number of ways.

Brad Johnson was a guy who always lit it up in the preseason.  Everybody mentioned he wasn't playing against the good players.  Bottom line with Sloter, give him a chance to move up and see how he does.  He not only looks good against third stringers.  He looks great.  I won't pretend to know as much as Zimmer, but the "gamer" concept is a possibility and I just don't understand not giving him an extended look even if Zimmer "thinks" he isn't ready.  I've seen many guys given a chance to move up at QB over the years  who clearly couldn't get it done, even playing with the third stringers.  The guy is athletic, has a gun, and can run like a deer.  Reminds me a little of Rich Gannon who we all know took a little time to develop, but ended up being dam good for a few years, and an excellent 2nd stringer for many.

When the dust settles this TC, I believe the Vikings will carry 3qb's and Sloter is on the 53.

Entering the season, The Kansas City Star ranked all 31 of the NFL’s projected starting quarterbacks. Warner was ranked dead last behind Doug Pederson, Cade McNown, Billy Joe Hobert, and others.

In his NFC West preview in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Mark Schlabach wrote:
Quote:“After enduring two seasons of mistake-prone [Tony] Banks, Vermeil made a $16.5 million gamble on Green. Now, Vermeil probably wishes he still had Banks. Former Arena League star Warner and rookie Joe Germaine aren’t NFL-caliber starters, so the Rams might turn to Justin.”
Jerry Magee of the San Diego Union-Tribune took it a step further in an article titled “Warner is a poor fit for the Rams.” Some excerpts:
Quote:“Warner, the quarterbacking successor to the luckless Trent Green in St. Louis, has appeared mostly in places where footballs are flung about by nets suspended behind the end zones and the fields, such as they are, have fences around them.”
Quote:“Still, the thinking here is that Vermeil must reach for a quarterback more renowned than Warner or journeyman Paul Justin, whom the Rams obtained from the Raiders after Green’s season-ending injury. One possibility: Jeff George. He has been a training-camp whiz in Minnesota; he played under Mike White, Vermeil’s ranking offensive assistant, in Oakland; and the Vikings might be willing to surrender him, at the proper price, of course. They have Randall Cunningham to do their passing and behind him Daunte Culpepper, a large rookie with impressive notices. They also wrote the Rams couldn’t win with a Kurt Warner lead-offense.”
Quote:“One has to question, finally, how long Vermeil can endure in St. Louis. The Chargers’ Rodney Harrison rolling into the back of Green’s legs on Saturday might have represented a knell for Vermeil. With Green available and with Marshall Faulk to do his running/receiving tricks, Vermeil might have had a chance to perpetuate himself. Not now, one can suspect. One doesn’t win in this league going into a season with a Kurt Warner-Paul Justin-Joe Germaine quarterbacking troika.”
Apparently, Rams fans weren’t very confident about Warner’s ability either. In a letter-to-the-editor piece for the St. Louis Dispatch, fans voiced their concerns.  Some examples:
Quote: “Not very good at all. I don’t think they’ll ever go anywhere with Vermeil as the coach. They were on shaky ground, but losing the quarterback, Green, that just put the nail in the coffin. I don’t think the whole organization is very professional at all. Just look at their history – Rich Brooks was a college coach with a losing record, Vermeil was out of the league for years, the free agents aren’t top of the line. I don’t think they’re committed to winning. It’s just a paycheck.”

“I think their chances were better before the quarterback got injured. I hope they do well, but I don’t think it looks very good. They don’t have a lot of good talent. I don’t think they’ll do any better than last year. I would have thought so if the quarterback had been healthy. Maybe (Kurt) Warner will do well, but I just don’t know much about him.”
“Their chances aren’t very good. I also think Dick Vermeil needs to quit crying. With Trent Green getting hurt, he was the best chance for a good season.”

Meanwhile, we give up a 5th rd. pick for a kicker that the "professional" coaching staff doesn't seem to even have a clue what he's good at...

After hearing what Zim said today I must admit I am reconsidering my stance on Sloter being #2. Doesn't sound like he's ready.
I'm probably way off...

Zim...like his coaching guru, Parcells....is/was LOATHE to hype 2 positions.  QB's & Kickers.

How could have Keenum played any better two yrs ago?  And very little stated praise from Zim during the season, that I could remember.

Zim's statements the other day, could be just 'motivation'.   Just spitballin'.

Or the guy is good enough to do both and they are trying to figure out if he should replace Bailey or Wile...  since neither have secured their spot on the team yet.
