This is why Sloter is still 3rd string

Honestly, does it matter? He's the 3rd string QB. I couldn't care less if he stays or goes at this point, the Vikings should draft a QB in the first 3 rounds next year anyway
This is true but will they? I doubt it.
The Vikings have had many years where they could have gone this route on draft day over Spielman's tenure and I can't recall them ever doing it. Rick either waits until it's a dire need at the position or fills the spots with free agents.
Cousins would have to shit the bed for the Vikings to draft a QB.

And it doesn't make any sense to draft a QB "in the first three rounds." You either get a franchise guy in the 1st round or don't bother. God knows we don't need any Mason Rudolphs, Deshone Kizers, Davis Webbs, CJ Beatherds, and Christian Hackenbergs wasting space on our bench.
Yeah the first round is part of the first 3 rounds

Like I said, either draft a 1st rounder or don't waste your time.

After hearing what Zim said today I must admit I am reconsidering my stance on Sloter being #2. Doesn't sound like he's ready.

That's me too...Seems pretty apparent he needs a little more curating on the position. Nothing wrong with that and KC is probably not going anywhere for a while either. I just got a feeling the surround is there for him now. That dude has a nice arm.

Vikings won't stick with Cousins unless they win. He'll be 33 years old within the first year of a new contract. Cousins was also a 4th round pick, no too shabby. This will be the season that they decide whether or not to keep him beyond the original contract.

Which is another reason why they need to find out more about what they have in Sloter.  If he cant play against the 2s in preseason without shitting the bed,  he likely has no future as a starter and they should  move on now and keep Browning as the 3, since they are reportedly high on him.  If Sloter proves to be capable to compete with the 2s,  keep him over mannion and let him focus on the shit he needs to learn instead of running the scout team every week that QB3 typically does.  He wont get as many reps in practice as QB3,  but he will get more reps in our offense and coaches can focus on his shortcomings more.

The only way I see mannion filling a role is if Sloter is a complete waste of time and they move on.  Either way they need to keep the youth QB carousel moving upward IMO.

After I heard his press conference remarks about Sloter, I'm questioning whether Zimmer is ready to be a Head Coach.
What was the benefit of his rude public ripping of Sloter? Yeah, it was a preseason game against 3rd string - we all know that, so does the press, but why not let Sloter have his moment? Sean Payton, who many (myself included) consider an ass, has his #3 QB put up big numbers in preseason and he doesn't mind giving him some compliments. What does it hurt?  Zimmer destroyed any trade value Sloter may have, too.

Zimmer should be glad the press is asking questions about something as minimal as 2nd/3rd string QB. But I guess he needs the preseason himself, to get ready to badmouth and scapegoat players during the regular season.

rude public ripping?
They asked a question about Sloter and if he is ready to move up.  He simply said he needs to get better at the stuff the press and fans don't see.  He has probably heard the question a 100 times and knows of the media/fans lust for the physical abilities of the kid.  But simply put, he isn't ready mentally and that is what Zim said.
Of course he could give the coach speak answer and then others would question whether he is fit to coach because he is too stupid to see this kid is ready for the HOF bust.
Get over it, Sloter will be 3rd string again as he needs to learn the mental part of the game.  Maybe Sloter needs to apply himself in the classroom.  But that is probably Zimmers fault cuz he didn't coddle him enough and give him a trophy.

I think you have to put it all in context. I thought it was a bit unusual as well. Coaches are never afraid to criticize other positions--God knows, Zim publicly challenges his defensive players all the time--but coaches seldom do that with QBs.  After all, they all wear dresses, as Jack Lambert used to say.

However, I went back and listened to the whole presser and then the one immediately following the game, and Zimmer was very complimentary of Sloter, saying he continues to play very well.

One thing we all know about Zimmer is that he hates when someone ELSE tells him how to run his team. See other comments directed at media and PFF, for example. I think his comments were more about that than Sloter.

If this was a debate on who should be the starting quarterback at the start of the season, then I can understand the back and forth comments since everyone has their preference.  But, we are talking about a 3rd string quarterback that has done extremely well playing with and against other 3rd string players during pre-season.  Is he ready to move up on the depth chart?  Who knows?  Maybe the head coach and the coaching staff?  According to them, Sloter is right where he needs to be.  Coaches will know when he's ready to make the leap.  People are over-thinking Sloter's value since he's consider an "Underdog" and want him to succeed.  No love for Mannion either.
