I tell you, Spielman taking chances on big time high school recruits that go to big time football schools (Ohio State) has been paying off to some extent. Holmes is a big talented kid.

I don't follow the recruiting world, so who else fits this bill?

Not sure if big time football schools fits the narrative, but Stefon Diggs was a 5-star recruit who got lost (and hurt) on a bad team at Maryland. Irv Smith was a 4-star recruit at Alabama. Oddly, the player who might fit it best is Laquon Treadwell. 5-star recruit, went to Ole Miss. Roc Thomas was a 5-star superstar coming out of high school. He was pursued by all the big schools. Ended up going to Auburn, but later transferred to Jacksonville State. Can't remember why though. Jayron Kearse  and Davante Downs were 4 star.

Treadwell has the talent IMO, but his issues seem to be mental.  It is always something mentally with him.  Trying too hard, working out fanatically, letting drops get in his head.

I guess on the others, late round or UDFAs, if you are gonna swing for something there, swing big.  Camp bodies are easy to find.  But if you hit on a late rounder, it can cover lots of blemishes.  (Diggs and Thielen)

Treadwell is big and athletic, but he is not very fluid in running routes and struggles to get adequate separation from the defender.  Then again, even a blind chicken finds a kernel of corn once in a while.

Good info, but it doesn't sound like something that is "paying off". Diggs didn't go to a big college program, Smith is TBD, and the rest of those are all on the bubble for roster spots.

"Paying off" implies that it's a strategy in the first place, which I don't necessarily agree with. If it is, it's probably more "high recruit" than "big school." And since Diggs, Kearse, Downs and Thomas were all highly recruited players taken in the 5th round and below, the fact that they're all still on the team is probably considered a "win" if it is a strategy.
