Definitely agree that both 0.0% and 5% are unrealistically low. But here's the thing: it doesn't matter what any of us think the odds are, if you're trying to see if the Vikings will start looking for alternatives. Do people predicting these low odds actually believe that Rick Spielman feels it's 1-in-20 or less that Cousins will remain here?? Not just some theory about what Spielman might believe internally: is he about to tell the Wilfs, "We need to start looking for someone to replace Cousins because we already know we aren't going to keep him after 2020"..?
People who think we will not re-sign Cousins (0.0 or 5% or anything else that low): do you think we will not re-sign him if, in the next two seasons, we win a Super Bowl with him starting at QB? What if we go to a SB, or have 2 straight 12+ win seasons with a playoff win each year? The people who say there is 0% chance we keep Cousins are not making a statement about the Vikings, Spielman, the salary cap or anything but Kirk Cousins himself. They don’t believe in him, which is fine. But saying there’s a 0% chance he plays great is as foolish as saying there is a 100% chance he plays great.
Objective, reasonable people will look at last year and see reason for pessimism and reason for optimism. Late in the year, he was surprisingly bad. Earlier in the year (against the Rams, Packers, in particular) he surprised most of us with just how good he was.
Vikings will try to get him some better protection and some play calling that isn’t as utterly preposterous as last year’s and we’ll see how he does. But whether he’s extended or not will have nothing to do with a Super Bowl or our win loss record. Nor should it. It will be about how Cousins plays.
Easton Stick in the fourth, been watching him play since his freshman year. He has a lot of talent.
I think the only way Cousins is off the team is if a better option is in hand, either outright better, or same quality but cheaper. I don't think we'll let Cousins go, and then see what's available. We'll have to have something in hand, and then not resign him. I think that pretty much rules out drafting a QB in 2021.
