Third Receiver Considerations....
#1
So, with all the hubbub abating a bit since free agency kicked off and the two ex-Steelers have elected to not win rings in the near future, I was considering receiving options behind our dynamic duo.

Granted, I know that cap space would have to be created, etc etc etc...but, let's face it: Treadwell should be completely out of chances.  I'm all for getting a late-rounder for him and applying his money elsewhere.

Robinson proved that he could get open for TDs, but I don't know how useful he can be, overall.

I keep coming back to two names: Pierre Garcon and Jordy Nelson.

Garcon spent a ton of time in Washington, was a big fan of Cousins, and is old/worn enough now that he shouldn't be too expensive.  They have proven to be productive in the past, which is already a big step up from Treadwell.

Nelson...well, I love the petty revenge angle.  Plus, he was an enormous pain in our ass as a cheese-humper, so I have to believe he's still capable of being a "safety valve" even if he's not a deep threat, anymore.

Just sorta speculating a bit.  Maybe one of our young'uns steps up, and we don't have to look outside the existing roster.  Maybe someone else gets picked up that I'm completely missing.

Still...Pierre or Jordy.  Either could be dangerous with Diggs/Thielen drawing most of the attention.
Let's beat the Lions and get that week of rest, Vikings! SKOL!!

I like it.

Both are extremely long in the tooth...  I don't think it would be the smartest move to pay a veteran FA WR to be your #3.  Especially when we need to use that cap space to bring back Easton or another free agent OL.

The team seems to be high on Beebe and if they bring back Robinson and have Treadwell...  Someone should emerge.  If the Vikings want another guy to compete, they'll probably look to the draft.

I don’t think the Vikings sign older players in FA (Favre does not count).

Yep. I think the team has plans for Beebe and they like Aldrick Robinson. I don't see any WR movement for the team.

I also think the Vikings prefer to sign younger FAs. Unfortunately, the options are getting slim: yesterday Kevin White (former #7 overall pick by the Bears) and Jordan Matthews both signed with new teams. Those both would have been bets on players overcoming multi-year injury problems.

Chris Conley would be my choice among remaining options. Conley has great speed, size, the kind of athleticism Spielman loves, and he has been decently productive. But he has been the #3 WR most of his time in KC, so he probably doesn't want to come to a team with 2 established WRs ahead of him.

I still wouldn't be surprised to see one of the Iowa TEs in the first round to essentially  be our 3rd receiver in sets with Rudolph.  I mean technically a TE is OL right?

Lots of options still available that easily would be an upgrade over Treadwell.
Kelvin Benjamin, Chris Conley, Dontrelle Inman, Jermaine Kearse, & Randall Cobb come to mind.
Any they sign would have to settle for a minimal one year deal.
Benjamin would be nice.
I would also draft someone like Terry McLaurin, Andy Isabella, Deebo Samuel, Hakeem Butler, Johnny Dixon, Parris Campbell, Emmanuel Hall, Miles Boykin, and maybe a couple of others.  I kind of like ones that have return experience too.

No need to sign a old and pricey veteran. This draft is stacked deep with good WRs in rounds 2 thru 4. Use whatever money you have to extend Thielen and just draft one. This is going to be a draft just like 2016 where the best receivers are not going to come from the 1st round, but instead the middle rounds...

I would not sign someone to an expensive deal.  But a 2 mil one year deal should be doable if they make some other moves.
Benjamin for 2 mil would be nice on paper.  Doubtful he agrees but the longer free agency goes on, the less players can get.
I would also want to bring in a draft pick too.
