Barkley over Mayfield for ROY
#1
Is this shocking to anyone else? Saquon Barkley was good, but only moved a 3-13 team to 5-11, and was about 19th of all-time rookie RBs... Baker Mayfield, OTOH, lifted a franchise in a historically bad state to almost .500 and still relevant near the end of the season, and broke the all-time rookie QB record for TD passes.

Was this due to writers resenting Mayfield's attitude? A plan to make Dave Gettleman feel better about passing on Sam Darnold? SMH.

Considering how gunslinging QB's are all the rage, it's somewhat surprising.  I chalks this up to the age-old nemesis of Midwest teams, the dreaded "east-coast sports bias".

Saquon is a special talent, but to pass on Mayfield is crazy imo.

This is a tough one. On one hand I think Barkley is future HOFer. But on other hand you are right. The QB is more important and he took a team that was terrible to win 7 games. Not too shabby. Should be co-owned by both.

I think you're down playing Barkley's season too much...

I mean, he had 13 games with 100+ scrimmage yards...  Was only the 3rd rookie in NFL history to have over 2,000 yards from scrimmage (Dickerson and Edgerrin James were the other 2)...  and broke the record for most receptions by a rookie RB in the NFL.

Mayfield certainly deserves to be in the conversation, but Barkley certainly lived up to the hype and I wouldn't be surprised if he's even better next season.  His offensive line was pure garbage and he still had a record setting season statistically.

I have no problem with him winning the award.

The impact of Mayfield on his team >> Barkley...but Saquon was the more spectacular performer...

It is about individual performances. I would have been ok with either choice. It shouldn't be about team record.

I'd go with Barkley. Mayfield had a good season, but he went into a better situation. That was a pretty good team in need of a QB...much much better than people thought they were. And I said that before the season, too.  Great offensive line with Bitonio, Tretter and Zeitler, 4-time pro bowler in Landry...Nick Chubb, Myles Garrett, Schobert, Ward, Peppers....now that they've got the QB (and one helluva draft), they're going to be a playoff team for the next several years.

I agree that the Browns were a better situation - and you didn't even mention that most of their improvement could be attributed to simply dumping Hue Jackson. But that's a pretty deep dive into the background that is rarely reflected in these types of popularity contests. IDK, league loves QBs, the Browns were a big turnaround story this year, so I don't see a better explanation than Ralphie's (East Coast Bias).
