Nick Foles and Carson Wentz
#1
Something that doesn't directly affect Vikings, but fun to speculate about. Rumor/announcement came out this week that the Eagles are going to franchise tag Foles and trade him.
Is this just to test interest? Because I think it's going to be marginal. Foles as a UFA would draw some suitors, I'm sure - but QB franchise tag contract was +$23M last year, will be higher this year. Someone could trade for him and negotiate a new deal, sure. But I think most teams think that Foles plays better in Philadelphia than he will anywhere else. My hunch is someone gives them a 2nd round pick.

Would the Eagles consider trading Carson Wentz instead? Because I think someone might give the Eagles a lot more. Shouldn't the Eagles be thinking, "Is Foles, our proven playoff winner and fan favorite, PLUS a top ten draft pick, worth more than Wentz and a 2nd rounder?" Imagine a deal with Jacksonville that gives the Eagles the #7 overall pick. Foles and Wentz are 30 and 26, respectively, so it's not exactly Josh McCown vs Sam Darnold.

It's probably obvious I would keep Foles on the Eagles. Part of my reason is that Wentz has not started a playoff game - and QBs generally lose their first. So that means they probably won't challenge for another title until 2020, and is their window still open? But a lot of people think Wentz is the next Peyton Manning, so I'm curious to hear that perspective.

I'm not sure Carson is going to finish his career.  Foles is the only true known commodity and he has shown leadership under pressure.

Some team will give a boat load for Carson.

Wentz cant make it through a season. Hes one season away from being named Carson Glass.

You build around Wentz...  He was having an MVP-type season before he tore his ACL and the Eagles won the Super Bowl without him.

He has way more talent and is 4 years younger than Foles.  You trade the system guy while his value is high and keep the better QB.

And last year was a push to get back and play while still recovering from the knee.

would be foolish to build around an older system QB that plays better as a backup than a starter.

You could turn this last part around, though: trade Wentz while his value is still high. He gets hurt once more and he's Sam Bradford. Oh, but he had that great season his second year, so he's a HOFer. Reminds me of some guy who had a great season in Philadelphia, threw 27 TDs and only 2 INTs in 13 games...oh, that was Nick Foles.
"System guy": Some people talk about Foles like he's Shaun Hill, but his arm make Case Keenum look like a junior high QB - and if Keenum had won this team's first and only Super Bowl, 90% of the state would insist he be a Viking for life.

I didn't say Wentz was going to be a HOF-er...  but he has a lot more talent than Foles.  You don't trade that away for a guy who thought about retiring because he lost his love for the game and didn't do anything after he left Philly the first time and played well in a handful of games this season.

Nick Foles - QB - Free AgentNick Foles declined his $20 million option, making him a free agent.
Foles bought back his freedom temporarily for $2 million. The question now becomes whether the Eagles will answer back and use the franchise tag in an effort to trade Foles. The endgame at some point will be Foles donning a new uniform in 2019. It’s just a matter of how he gets to that. He’ll get a multi-year deal.Related: Eagles

Not going to be popular but I would rather have Foles.
