I think it's a perfect situation for him to thrive. Watch he gets it together while everything goes to shit around him. I wish him well.

Can't help but root for the kid. He didn't get much of a shot, IMO.
He should have never been put into the position he was.  How are you going to spend the Money on a franchise QB for a Super bowl then put a Rookie Kicker on the roster.
If hes going to play in the NFL there is no protecting him.  Doesnt matter what team you’re on.
Bull, Blair Walsh was ok situation when the Vikings drafted him.  Super bowl wasn't something people were thinking of.

This season is a marked season, and a Rookie Kicker should have never been part of the plan.  Kicker with a track record of kicking should have.

Carlson might end up being a good kicker,  but he needs a minute to develop on a team that doesn't need him to be great now.

I f you're a bottom tier team you can take a chance on a big leg kicker and let him develop, go through the ups and downs, but the Vikings didn't have time for that.  One game could cost home field advantage.
...and then what happened to Walsh?  Hes out of the league as far as I know.  So what did starting him off on the Vikings do for him?

And are you telling me that just because youre on a team the may not be considered a contender, the pressure is off?  and its okay to miss kicks and lose games on some teams?
What about the coaches that need to win to keep their jobs?  If you miss kicks in this league you are gone, no matter what team.

To Whizz's point, other than GB sticking with Crosby, what team has? None I can think of. This isn't a Viking unique thing, its a league wide deal. Teams have already cut kickers this year other than the Vikings.

The issue is teams can't afford to let young kickers figure it out. Maybe they bump around and the light goes on with their 2nd or 3rd team. Crosby had already established himself as a pretty good kicker before his issues. That's why Walsh got a lot of rope before he was cut, he had a great rookie year. Its just the way it is although I agree it seems counter productive to deal with kickers that way to a great degree.

Because Kickers are unique animals.  They don't get multiple plays back to back to work out the kinks.  They are somewhat like QBs where to much of the success or blame is put on them.  But they are different because the light shines directly on them alone.  Can anyone name they guy that held for Walsh's shank?  Most Viking fans remember that the laces were facing him and probably remember the name.  But most fans only remember Walsh missed.  And most won't recall that he was the only one to score for the Vikings that day.  Or that the D let Wilson escape after a fumble to throw a lolipop pass that was caught and made a huge gain.

So kickers have to have balls of brass as their most important trait.  A 50 yard FG is looked at as routine, should be made.  Only when a guy misses do we think about the kicker.  He has to shake it off and wait for many minutes, maybe an hour or even a week to redeem himself.  But most kickers are picked because they have a huge leg and can kick the ball a long ways.  Yet the best are those that have the mental makeup to forget a miss and simply kick the next one.  And even the best (Gary Anderson, Dan Bailey) miss some important ones.

Carlson has landed with a coach who doesn't need to win to keep his job.

Well, he’s young and has a big leg but we’ll see how long that lasts if he continues to miss kicks.  He replaced someone.  Why?
