Why put yourself thru it?
#1
That's the question I've been asking myself often in recent years. And the answer is that I don't now. Didn't watch one second of the game last night. Woke up to pee at midnight, checked the score on my phone and just shook my head. Wasn't surprised.

I'm at the point now where its just wake me up when they are really a good team. I can watch highlights to see the good plays, but I won't put myself thru another 3+ hours of frustration. From what I'm gathering, it was one frustrating watch last night as a Viking's fan. I just don't want to do that anymore. If just one time if paid off in their history, I know I'd feel differently. But it obviously hasn't and can't imagine when it will.

I'll always have hope when a new season starts, but my fandom has been firmly placed on the back burner. And that happened before this year started. I think this has worked well for me, but I know its not for everyone. Its just so out of my control, why waste the emotional energy to be ultimately disappointed time after time? There has been ZERO pay off for me as a long suffering fan of this team. Unconditional love? Bah, that's for my son. Not a football team.

You put yourself through it for moments like winning a CG, A division, Mpls Miracle type moment. A chance to make the playoffs and get hot is what it's all about. Year after year, that's what its about.

Cant take the game too seriously --- its just a game. That helps mitigate disappointment.

Sticky, I've been a fan of the Vikes since 1969 and have endured enough fan pain to last several lifetimes.  I don't set my watch by this team any longer and have settled into a comfortable "view from above" approach.  I'll watch the games if I'm able...haven't paid to watch them for about a decade now.  I no longer buy player jerseys as I realize they'll be playing for the Raiders, 49'ers or Titans in a few years.  Individuals come and go in this game and to emotionally tie myself to them is pointless.
I still bleed purple and do want to see the organization succeed, but no longer fret over their failures.  It may take the rest of my life to see it happen, but in the grand scheme of things, it's still a kids game.
But I do hate the Pukers! Wink

I hear everything you are saying and that is how I feel.   The first half last night was an exercise in futility when they played just like they did against the Bears and the Patriots.
I said we would loose to the Pats and the Seahawks then rebound and beat Miami and maybe the Lions and then finish off by beating the toothless Bears who will be resting all their players for the playoffs after winning the division.
And this after a season start where we were looking to play in the SB or at least make a deep run into the playoffs.  This after getting a new franchise QB and paying big bucks to get Richardson.  I guess the tell tale sign was when we lost to Buffalo.
I would not be frustrated after just one down season but we keep shitting the bed.  Last night I was upset we stalled at three and out on the first series and looked like we had made not game to offset the Seahawks.  We just ran out the same game plan and expected the other team to act like they had never seen it before.
I am addicted to watching the Vikings games and have NEVER turned a game off but I am at about the end of my patience.  Like you said: "wake me when you decide to play football again and can beat a good team once in a while".  The excitement is gone.

Boy I could not agree more.  39 years of torture is enough.  This team is just no fun to watch.  Poor play calling, poor execution, just poor play.  At this point just put them and us out of our misery.  And hey RICK...go get a Offensive line that is not offensive please.  Worst offensive line we may have ever had.

Sounds like a healthy approach.  I did a group "fatbike" snow ride last night, and didn't get to watch the game much until the 4th quarter.  Man, am I glad I didn't decide to stay at home and not go biking.  I had way more fun going on that ride than watching the Vikes play like shit again.

For some reason I was shocked on how crappy our offense is now, and was genuinely PO'd.  It kind of wrecked a great evening I had before watching them.

I really think I need to step back too.  I guess I bought into the idea this was going to be a contending team for several years, but now it looks like last year was a fluke.  There are other more fun ways to find entertainment, and I'm certainly not having fun watching this underperforming Viking team each week.

What's really frustrating is that I think in Zimmer's 5 years here, we've had probably 3 or 4 of our worst offensive lines ever.  So sick of the continued horseshit play by one of the most important units on the team.

I am thinking the same thing,  granted a lot of it has been injuries,  but at some point I have to start to wonder how lightning can keep striking the same place, year in and year out.  at some point they need to be putting more emphasis on drafting that position to be able to afford better, cheaper depth at the position to offset these injuries and the high priced talent on the defensive side of the ball.  I am sure it would have been better with Easton and Collins in the mix,  but injuries are part of the game and it seems that Rick and Zim dont account for that when they are assembling a roster aside from DL and DB.

Players, coaches, GM's, and even owners come and go, but nothing ever seems to change. I have been a fan since day one and recon I will remain one. However, I'm not emotionally invested like I once was. I expect the Vikings to be good once every ten years or so, then piss down their leg, because that is what they do.
I'm not on the team, so despite being disappointed, I don't let it ruin my day.
This years team reminds me of the one that lost to the Cardinals on the last play of the season to get knocked out of the playoffs. They aren't very good.
A great QB can help it's bad O-line. Cousins isn't that guy.
I don't think Rick will get the axe this year, but I think he is sitting in a pretty warm chair!

'Cause we have history...
The Vikes are like that hot little number you've always wanted...she shows "just" enough interest in you that you think you've got a chance.....so then you start to reciprocate your interest...and that's when..
SPLAT....she steps on your nuts.
So you think, "never again", but there's just something about her....her eyes...her smile...that keeps you coming back...maybe, just maybe she needs time. She swings her hair back, and everything goes in slow motion....the heavens open, angels sing.....

so you smile, she smiles back, you start talking again when...
CRUNCH....she steps on your nuts...
...but you just can't shake her, despite 50 years of stepping on your sack
