This behind the LOS screens to WR's and laterals have to stop. Especially when the Jets had 9 in the box and were never fooled by 'em.
And if Thielen can get 100 plus down the field, why the hell is Diggs used as a gimmick player? Second and long and they're throwing little dump passes?
Too many quick 3 and outs. Luckily Darnold was Darnold today.
Those plays were driving me nuts. Diggs is a good route runner, yet they constantly have him running drag routes and receiver screens. Defenses are sitting on those plays now, so there's not a huge chance for yards after the catch, which those plays rely on. At least today there was a ton of wind, that may have limited downfield passing, but we've been running the same plays for the past few weeks. Not to mention that we've had a couple fumbles on those short passes because Cousins ends up throwing them backwards and teams blow up the plays, because they know what is coming.
I get that the short passes are basically meant as runs, but the abandonment of the running game is frustrating. Not much to say on that other than that we need to run more. They've run better the past two games, not sure if that can be attributed to O'Neill or just playing bad teams. The Jets record is fine, but I still view them as a bad team.
I don't think this is just a DeFilippo thing, but does anyone with good knowledge of blocking know why they motion the receiver back behind the OT to seal the edge on almost every running play? It feels like it telegraphs the play or is it purely a numbers game at that point and the advantage of an extra blocker outweighs the defense knowing what it is coming? I saw that they were trying to run same passes out of that look today, but those didn't work. Maybe I just became more aware of it recently, but it feels like we've done this all the time under Shurmur and DeFilippo and I don't remember this being so common before them.
