Zimmer at presser (this is an actual quote):

Reporter: 'So why did you cut Daniel Carlson?'

Zimmer: 'Did you see the game?'

LOL. With all due respect to a young man in Carlson that I'm sure did not want to miss those kicks, Zimmer gives zero f%^&s. Make the kicks, do your job. Its a bottom line business, the NFL.
and I am fine with that, but what pisses me off is the dual standard,  a kicker misses a few kicks and hes gone,  a defensive player has a bad game and nothing changes.  yes he should have made those kicks,  but we have seen Waynes and others as they were being developed make multiple mistakes and they are back out there the next series (as they should be)  I dont have an issue with making the move for bailey as I have no idea where carlsons head is at right now,  but at some point the nfl hard asses need to realize that kicker are part of the game and teams that treat the position with a little more respect might get rewarded.   of course fans are worse than coaches likely could ever be,  but Zimmer seems to harbor some special venom for kickers.
Wha?? Man, I don't get that take at all. Yes, everyone makes mistakes as they learn the complexities of their position. Takes a Zim corner years to figure it out. Takes most QBs a couple of years to figure out how to play QB in the NFL. But kicking isn't complicated. There are no "plays" to learn, nothing to "read" or react to. It's pretty much see ball, kick ball, go sit down. And if you make most of your kicks, you can make a nice living. Clearly Carlson is technically sound or he wouldn't have won the job in Eagan, but game situations are different. Every kick inside of 50 yards is 100% in the head. Yes, every kicker misses important kicks, but most kickers are able to make an adjustment and make the next one. The problem with Carlson is that he missed two straight in preseason game three, which is alarming enough, but 3 straight in one game? That's criminal. Gotta great leg, he just doesn't have the head to be an NFL kicker.
you dont think the game has to slow down for kickers?  everything about the game is ratcheted up in the pros and that includes that timing, launch angles and what not.  better athletes trying to block those kicks means a much more precise kick everytime.  I am sure that there are things to think about and work on for kickers as there are for every other position.  maybe not as much to digest, but I am still guessing that their heads are swimming as much as any rookies.

...and why was Bailey sitting on the street again?

I heard it was money that got him cut.
Bottom is that he is a top kicker on a top team.  We cannot afford to add average players anymore.  Especially when the best players are calling on us wanting to play here.
I heard that someone asked Zimmer about cutting a rookie kicker and his response was..."did you see the game?"

What else do you expect MB? We're all screwed up in the head over kickers around here...

I think they should take a serious look at eliminating those plays from the game entirely from a mental safety standpoint. The stress of having to please a head coach is overwhelming; expecially when making one isn't good enough...

---------

No other position on the field is as directly responsible for points as the kicker. Waynes gets burned and we live for the next play. Waynes gets burned 3 times for TDs and yea, were gonna have a thread about it and he's gonna be the media goat all week...

We just upgraded the kicker position and luckly didnt have to lose in the process of getting to this point. Its a team blessing. Its not anyone elses fault except except Carlson's. His skill is why he was brought in. It wasnt panning out and now we're 1-0-1 over it. He made some mistakes prior to the game yesterday. With Bailey available and willing to play here, why **** around with that all season?

i would think carlson will get picked up
I can see it, but it does support the notion that drafting punters and kickers is a bad idea.  Free agents are good enough.  Alas, this is one of RS failings.  He will never give up drafting kickers and punters, he has convinced himself he sees intangibles that others can't see.

Just like he shouldn't have drafted Hughes or Oneill?

I have to laugh at the monday morning GMs.  Don't necessarily disagree that drafting a kicker often is a waste, but certainly not going to pretend I am smarter than they are.

Second best news I've heard in weeks...

On the flip side of my tormented Viking fans psyche,  anyone else hearing Joe Buck say say " I can't believe the most accurate kicked in NFL history missed a gimme leaving the Vikings short of the Super Bowl yet again? "Was

Yeah, that's what's on continuous loop in my head right now...

wonder how much $$ he got. we didnt have much to give.
bullazin, how is asking about the comtract a bad thing?  Bailey was making $3.3m with dallas. We had between $500k and $1.5m depending on the source. Bailey had four offers according to reports but was looking for the “right” place. One would have to think a winning team was part of it but certainly money had to be a factor.

So if he wanted close to his Dallas price tag, who did we adjust?  Or did Bailey throw us a solid like Ilkola did and play for less?

i dont have a problem with drafting kickers either. it does seem that the good ones get discovered (udfa) rather then drafted though. eventually we have to find a kicking solution. bailey isnt going to hang out for chump change if he comes in and kicks great this year.

flip side? Was Buck on track to be proclaiming, "DAN CARLSON HAS JUST KICKED THE VIKINGS INTO SUPER BOWL!!!"

(I laughed at your joke then thought about it too hard. I'm glad it wont be Carlson in that spot...)

No one will remember Carlson in 17 weeks. If Bailey misses a super bowl kick I doubt we'll be revisiting this decision; expecially if Bailey plays well enough to remain on the roster (lol) all season.

... i think thats sounds just the Vikings "regular" side!
