Does cutting a rookie kicker send a bad message to the rest of the team?
#11
While i defend kickers,   I have to ask,  if they dont make a move does that send a message to the rest of the roster?  K is a unique spot as he cant go to the bench for a week or 2,  there is only one K so I will understand if they decide to give him another week considering the teams cap situation.  But as a player who busts ass or sits on the bench,  how can you have a guy that completely shits the bed on 3 different opportunities get to slide?

I can see this one going either way and if I were Zim I am pretty sure I would be leaning on my veterans for some perspective on the pulse of the lockerroom.  We all know that most of our guys were likley doing and saying the right things to the kid last night,  but in private what is their position on the matter?

So Carlson is the "glue" keeping this Viking locker room bonding together so well?  Really?

I'd think the guys that remember Blair would appreciate Carlson's release.  It sends the message that the team is serious about winning, and they don't want the kicker to lose games the rest of the players work so hard for.

Maybe Treadwell would mind.  After Carlson, he's next in line to be replaced.

have to cut him asap. the two missed 48 yarders, eventhough horribly missed, wouldnt have warranted cutting him

settimg him up for perfect position with timeout to spare and a play left on the field tells me they thought 35 yarder was his sweet spot. and he still shit the bed.

If he stays and does well the rest of the season, wouldn't you feel like he would pee down his leg in the playoffs. They said he makes most all of his kicks in practice, but he has missed several in the games if you include the preseason. The bigger the game the more likely he will miss.
I know there are salary cap issues but I hope they replace him.

I just had a thought as to how demoralizing it is for the team to drive down the field (in any game) only to have the kicker miss the field goal.
Most of the time the players pat the kicker on the head and realize he will not hit all of them but multiple misses and misses in key games is something different.
Point is that it might be demoralizing to cut him but it could also send bad vibes and trust to the rest of the team when they can't trust their kicker to do his job and you keep him.  Kind of like the QB loosing trust in Treadwell.

Although I agree it's a short rope, he is a kicker.  F$%#&*g kickers.  It's  all mental with these guys.  I think if you have a chance to get Bailey, you get him now.  Not sure if he will ever be able to be trusted in a critical situation again.  They all miss, but an NFL kicker does not miss 3 in a row.  Especially when they were not even close.

The only question I ask is just how often will kickers like Dan Bailey be sitting there for the taking? Never is the answer. He's going to get signed very soon and I sure hope he's got purple on his back by the end of the week.

i would like to know his asking price.  he was cut because he was due around 3 million IIRC and he refused to take a pay cut.  If he is still wanting that kind of money then the team cant afford him without reworking some of the other guys to make space this year which would take time.  I have seen the Vikings caps space reported as low as about 1.5 million.

Agreed.  I think it sends a worse message to the team if you do nothing.     52 other guys fought hard to come back and put the team in a position to win a key division game on the road.    Carlson blew it, and can not be trusted for the rest of the year in crucial situations.

Either cut Carlson, or put him on IR with some phantom leg injury, sign Forbath, Bailey, etc and be done with it.
