5 RBs seems like too many.  I expect this may change.

Surprised they're keeping Roc, for now.  I suppose they didn't think it likely he'd make it through waivers now but will try once other team's rosters and ps are set.

1 less Wr + 1 moe RB, they will throw to the backs a shitload, apparently...

The Vikings probably figure it would be safer to place some wide receivers on the practice squad rather than try and stash Roc Thomas there.  He would probably be claimed by some other team for depth on their active roster.  During the season, if any player goes on I.R. due to an injury than the Vikings can pull a wide receiver and put him on the active roster.  Pretty much don't want to take the chance of losing Thomas.

Gotta be happy for Boone, Thomas and Hill making the first 53 from UDFA status though.  Happy, happy day for them! Smile

I'm sure they are not done with roster moves, but there are a couple things that stick out:

  1. I like that Roc Thomas made the roster. He's an intriguing player and with Cook coming back off of an ACL tear, it makes sense to keep some extra RB depth around. That being said, they may be trying to sneak him onto the Practice Squad and he could be released late in favor of OL or LB help.
  2. I'm confused that Zylstra made the roster over Beebe. Has Zylstra really shown enough to make the roster?
  3. I'm surprised by carrying only three TEs when DeFilippo is known for utilizing multi TE sets. I feel like this could change when they scan the waiver wires or maybe after they are confident that Cook can take a full workload.
  4. I forgot that David Parry exists. I would have liked to see Odenigbo or Robison in that spot. Maybe we can sign Odenigbo to the Practice Squad. I also hope that the coaches rotate the DL a lot more than they did last season.
  5. I felt that Downs deserved to make the roster, but wouldn't be shocked if they add 1 more LB. Though it does sound like they may be using Iloka as "LB" in big nickel packages, so maybe that is how they chose to address that need.
  6. Hill making the roster is a pleasant surprise. I would expect that most weeks he'll be inactive or playing special teams, but he has a high upside and I don't think they could have snuck him onto the Practice Squad.
  7. I'm happy to see Kearse make the roster. He's probably our best special teams coverage player and he has a good chance to learn from Iloka, who has very similar physical traits.
  8. Nervous about Carlson. I think trading two 5ths for him was a bad move and I hope that Spielman/Priefer's decision to take Carlson and release Forbath doesn't come back to bite us.

Keep in mind that Cook is coming back off of an ACL. They seem to think he's fine, but probably good to keep an insurance policy around for a few games at least. It was 50/50 on whether we could get Thomas to the Practice Squad. He showed enough flashes during the preseason, but maybe being banged up right now could have scared some teams off.

Sherels survives for another year.   Also, really surprised how thin they are a OG.  Other than that not too many surprises other than BRob of course.
