I think Mac Alex holds down the slot starting spot and Sherels makes the team...Hughes will get worked in slowly this year and it sounds like Mackenzie is really settling into slot well.

The only way I see Sherels sticking is if he is on  both return and coverage teams.  his skills as a DB wouldnt earn him a spot and although he is good at the return game,  is he really that much better than somebody else that will contribute more in the offensive or defensive game plan?  kind of like when people got all excited for Patterson... yes he led the league,  but it really only amounted on average to be about a few yards per game and maybe a point or 2 at the most per game over the course of a year.  its such a small increment I think the roster spot could be put to better use... like OLine depth.

I think a good punt returner over an average one is probably worth the same as 1-2 ints from a QB, and its probably worth more to us as a conservative, make no mistakes, take fewer risks type of a team than it does to a team with a gunslinging offense that dabbles in the high risk high reward type of style.

come again what?   1-2 turnovers per season maybe?  ok, but there are plenty of guys that can limit the turnovers,   hell I am sure we could find a solid roster guy that that could make a FC on about every punt and not worry about turning it over at all.  that 23 return yards per game could  be replaced pretty easy imo over the course of 60 minutes of football.

MS was the leagues 7th best returner last year in terms of average yards per return with 9.54,  the league average returner was 8.16 yards.  MS averaged about 2.4 returns per game so the net yardage gained per game by MS vs the league average guy was only about 3.4 yards per game more for MS.  I say we throw out the points because MS didnt have one last year,  but there were only 8 in the whole league with only 1 guy having more than 1... so odds are not very high for points to factor into the decision.

it would be great to not have to worry about carrying extra depth for O and D position and be able to carry extra special teams specialists,  but with the OL the way it is,  I personally would be more comfortable knowing that we have another G or OT on the bench than a 6th or 7th CB that can give us a slightly better punt returner.  IMO if MS makes the team its because he is PR KR and a gunner on both coverage teams.
