I think that you have to listen to Spielman and Stephenson.

They said they had never seen a run on interior linemen like they did in the 2nd round.  Spielman also said they had to take O'Neill at 62 because there would be no linemen available at 93.

Not sure how others read this but to me, it sounds like they were expecting a guard/center to be available at or near 62.

They misread the draft this year.

It is fair to be critical when you actually hear them speak.

I was not a fan of taking a guard early either unless it was Price, Wynn, or Ragnow and not even then so much.

But this team has NO right guard worth mentioning and the left guard is just OK.

They do have 3 good corners already and there are still some veteran free agents out there.

I think the people critical of the 1st pick have a legitimate reason to be disappointed.

Is the sky falling?  No.

But it is more than OK, and healthy, to express your dismay during and right after the draft.

Four of those that he passed on went in the next ten picks in the early second round.  Picking late in the round is a game he isnt used to. He guessed wrong. Maybe they get a vet in the next round of cuts.

Hopefully that CB is faster than his time indicates.  4.53/40 isnt great for a kick returner.
The tackle looks like it will be interesting to see what they do with him.
Surprised with a kicker.  I thought they were hapoy with the current one.

I really hope the starters on the O line stay healthy this year.  What a crazy draft.

Hughes is much faster on tape than the 4.53 implies. To me he looks like a he’s a 4.40 type of guy. That’s the tough part about the underwear olympics. Some guys just don’t run fast because they can’t get the start down right, nerves, etc. My concern with Hughes is play experience and background. Physically I’m not worried.

I am not sure why people are discounting Compton starting at RG. He is a younger version of Berger. 

He gave up 2 sacks all last year. One penalty over the last 11 games and was on a starting OL
the year before that lead to Matt Ryan’s MvP season. 

He is a local guy who is highly trusted by our new QB

Reiff-Easton-Elf-Compton-Remmers
with backups at
T: ONeill, Hill
G: Isodora, Andrews, Collins
3 of your 5 backups and 3 of your starters have position flexibility (aka Easton can play C if necessary, Remmers can play G, etc).  I expect Gossett and Storm end up PS

The improvement of play of the youngsters plus the stability of the vets should be at the minimum a better performance than last year’s line

If Elf's ankle is not ready to go for OTA's I expect Andrews will run with the 1s at C.  Easton played really well before his injury. He is fine at LG.  I believe Compton started in the SB against NE. He probably has the inside track at RG but there is plenty of talent and position flexibility now on the OL. Let them compete in camp and see who wins.  We are fine here - barring a run of injuries. I would be very surprised if we sign a FA veteran OL unless there is some unexpected cap casualty that is too good to pass up. Unlikely.
I liked the Hughes pick. DB was our biggest need.  I liked Josh Jackson better but the Vikings did not. Oh well. 
OL was also a need and we addressed that in the second and again later in the draft. The O'Neill pick shows you what the Vikings value in OL - the ability to move. That's why I think the only viable OL picks in the first were McGlinchey, Miller, and Wynn. Not Will Henderson, even though he could turn out to be really good. But he was not a fit. And I don't think we were ever taking a G/C in the first or second.  I think they wanted a T. If O'Neill can start right away, Remmers will compete to start at G and will back up at T.

I didn't realize how solid Compton is until we failed to add an immediate starter on the OLine and looked at his history. Strong lower body that uses his power to hold up well to power rushers. He has the flexibility and experience playing guard and tackle so whatever the Vikings decide with Remmers, he can easily handle the other spot. I guess who gets a starting job will depend on how far Isodora and Collins have developed. Gossett could be a sleeper at Guard, but I think he will need more time before he is ready to step in. I'm not sure what to think about Hill. His lack of experience showed up big time in the playoffs. He definitely needs more seasoning, but based on what we saw from him in the starts he had, I'm not convinced he is the long term answer.
