It is interesting to me that despite finishing with the #1 Defense and only the #11 offense that some people believe we need to once again use our high draft picks for defense. It defies all logic.

I think we will get a starting lineman, or at least one who can compete to start, just not in the first.

to be fair it was a number 11 offense while Cook was out and Case friggin Keenum playing QB, so upgrade at QB and RB already.....
But I agree the OL needs another talented player unless they feel guys like Hill, Isadora, and Collins are headed in the right direction.
After passing on OL in the 1st, we'll need to hope that someone like James Daniels or Connor Williams makes it to our pick or at least within reasonable striking distance.
It is concerning that Spielman has only drafted two OL in the first two rounds since 2006, yet we've drafted 5 corners in the first two rounds since 2012. I get that college OL coaching is bad/not in sync with what the NFL wants, so there is a case to be made that taking the long road to develop lower level prospects can work. However, I think that the lack of at least some top end talent has played into how bad the OL has been for the past decade or more. I am hoping that spending a 3rd on Elflein last year and getting an immediate return will make them confident enough to draft another OL in the 2nd or 3rd round. I certainly hope it would, since they just invested $84 million in Cousins and he's nowhere near as mobile as Keenum was.

Well to be fair we are paying Cousins a hell of a lot more so that automatically makes him much better than Keenum.
Rick has only drafted two? huh.
They have swung and missed in the second round to the point I no longer trust them to upgrade the mediocre rabble we currently have to feed.
This is how GMs lose their job. Dont think it can happen? Put another first round draft pick on the pine while the O line struggles yet another year, and one more QB goes to IR, forcing them to pull yet another rabbit out of their cap to save the season and their hides. I have no doubt Rick is run out of town.

It is thinking like that which has gotten them into this situation. I dont blame you, under Rick it has become the Viking way of handling the O line. Unless it is a LT just throw a second, third or fourth at it and hope they get by another year. We have gotten used to things such as “The most pressured, most knocked down or the most sacked” QB. Business as normal.
They need 2-3 top draft picks to get this O line to an above average group with the depth to compete through the season and the playoffs. They need depth at WR/ TE.
A number four CB first round draft pick? Dumbest move the team has made since Childress was coach.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I actually wanted Mo Hurst there - I never thought he would be there. That was not the biggest need, I just think he was the best player with a big gap between him and the next best pass rushing 3-Tech.
But passing on him, I think CB was the right pick. There are lots of good OL in this draft. I feel pretty confident we will take a good one. We took Elf in the 3rd last year. I am not convinced we will take OL in the second but that is probably more likely than not. But I do expect we will draft an OL tonight assuming we make both picks. If Orlando Brown is there in the second, I would take him. I like Jones a lot, too.
If the players they liked for the first round were picked ahead of #30 what are they supposed to do??? We didn't really have the ammo to move up in the first. Not having that 4th rounder could be one of the reasons they didn't want to move up or couldn't move up. I think they wanted Ragnow or Price. When listening to Rick answer questions during the PC about Hughes he ALMOST stumbled and made a little remark about watching the draft unfold and seeing guys they liked go ahead of their pick. Ragnow went at 20 to Detroit and Price at 21 to the Bengals, and then Wynn at 23 to New England. So they stayed true to their board and picked the guy who they had ranked highest at that point.
It's the draft. There's no way to get every prospect you like. As much as there's been angst about all of this you'd think we drafted a punter at 30.
Also, FWIW, I've seen some complaining from the Lions faithful this morning about the Ragnow pick. There's just no way to make everyone happy when it comes to the draft....and I don't think teams worry about making everyone happy, only themselves.

Really?! They went and got reiff and remmers last year and drafted one of the most contributing lineman in the 3rd after that. What the fuck do you want him to do now, pick 3-4 o lineman this year after replacing 3 positions last year? You cant start more than 5 of these guys and they arent getting rotated in like corners. Your outlook on what he should do is incredibly short sighted. Sounds like everyone last year after we picked Dalvin Cook instead of a lineman and turned out pretty OK when we got Pat and Dalvin without a 1st rounder. I am going to trust the guy that put together a 13-3 roster last year and the leagues best D. Full disclosure I wanted Hernandez, but I am not going to jump off a building because we picked one of the most polished corners in a division thats likes throwing the ball around the field and a former first rounder thats going to get expensive next year.
Sherels would get killed playing CB. If Rhodes or Waynes or Mac get hurt and have to miss a game or two, we would be in trouble. Hughes was both a need and a talent pick. It was more than fine.
And we do not know how much they like Andrews or Compton. Either way, our depth at OL is much better than at CB. I would not rule out taking another CB in this draft.
It did hurt to pass on Hurst. I hope we plan on keeping Richardson for more than one year. And we need Johnson to step up this year, too. Those, and the need at CB, would be reasons not to take Hurst at 30.
But so far we are fine. Let's see how we do today.
