shit if we land king it might actually make the cousins signing worth it
We don’t need no stinking punter...
Because we have Cousins...
TD’s & FG’s From Now On !

I know that was a tongue in cheek comment,  but I had the same initial reaction.  We have the highest priced QB,  and  now we are looking add what could be the highest priced punter?   I thought the point of the "better" qb was to score on more drives and not habe to rely on a boomstick punter.

Don't get me wrong,  the dudes got an amazing leg, but are we really cutting and threatening to cut our loyal veteran position players in order to pay more for a guy that impacts the game all of about 3 to 4 plays a game?

If he signs great,  but at what cost will it come?  Remember all this cap space was supposed to be for restructuring and extending our own studs.  And I don't think a better punter is going to be the player that puts the team over the top in terms of breaking any post season droughts. I could be wrong but I don't see the major benefit.

I like winning the field position game...whether it's a punter, kick returner, gunner, or punt returner...games typically come down to a couple plays...I'd like to maximize all three phases as much as feasible...

When you are talking about punters you know it is the slow season.

I use to love watching Jamie Dukes on NFL Network when they were covering the combine.  As soon as they started talking about kickers (or punters) he would just walk off the set.  Too funny and true.  I mean who really cares.

Quigley had the most punts fair caught and had zero touch backs all season.  Perhaps he is being asked to kick the ball high in order to get those fair catches?  Nobody knows the answer to this unless they ask Preifer.

The real question is how much should the Vikings pay a punter?  Here are the top salaries for punters ...

Player | Team | Total Value | Avg./Year | Guaranteed
Thomas Morstead | Saints | $15,600,000  | $3,900,000  | $9,118,000
Johnny Hekker | Rams | $20,814,716  | $3,469,119  | $4,250,001
Sam Martin | Lions | $13,600,276  | $3,400,069  | $3,175,000
Bryan Anger | Buccaneers | $17,000,000  | $3,400,000  | $2,500,000
Sam Koch | Ravens | $16,250,000  | $3,250,000  | $5,000,000
Brett Kern | Titans | $15,000,000  | $3,000,000  | $5,000,000
Matt Bosher | Falcons | $14,500,000  | $2,900,000  | $3,031,176
Britton Colquitt | Browns | $11,200,000  | $2,800,000  | $3,150,000
Kevin Huber | Bengals | $7,950,000  | $2,650,000  | $1,550,000
Jon Ryan | Seahawks | $10,000,000  | $2,500,000  | $3,400,000
Dustin Colquitt | Chiefs | $7,500,000  | $2,500,000  | $2,965,000
Brad Nortman | Jaguars | $8,800,000  | $2,200,000  | $1,650,000
Chris Jones | Cowboys | $8,700,000  | $2,175,000  | $2,500,000
Ryan Allen | Patriots | $6,100,000  | $2,033,333  | $3,000,000
Shane Lechler | Texans | $2,000,000  | $2,000,000  | $600,000
Andy Lee | Cardinals | $3,915,000  | $1,957,500  | $500,000
Jordan Berry | Steelers | $1,907,000  | $1,907,000  | $0
Tress Way | Redskins | $7,800,000  | $1,560,000  | $1,850,000
Pat O’Donnell | Bears | $1,500,000  | $1,500,000  | $500,000
Colton Schmidt | Bills | $2,600,000  | $1,300,000  | $400,000
Jeff Locke | 49ers | $790,000  | $790,000  | $0
Ryan Quigley | Vikings | $1,565,000  | $782,500  | $0

Marquette King signed a 5 year 16.5 mil deal with the Raiders in 2016 which averages out to 3.3 mil.

Should the Vikings pay 3.3 mil for a punter?

Heck no!

how much are you willing to spend for an average of an extra 15.5 yards per game?  avg 4.4 punts per game at about 3.5 yards better net punt.  I understand the field position game,  but we are talking about 3.5 yards per punt.  also look at the fair catch difference,   I am betting that Quigly was going for height and not distance and that could easily take away from Kings net if he was shooting for the same outcome under Priefer.  We know that Kluwe and Priefer used to butt heads over this issue so I am guessing the Vikings punters are still asked to hit it as far as they can without out kicking their coverage.

Quigley is doing just fine for a 2 million dollar a year (give or take) cap savings IMO.

Also I would hope that with a 28 million dollar QB that we would at least cut 1 punt per game so theres that.

If we really wanted to help the special teams maybe we should be looking at the other kicker that the raiders cut loose.  sure he would have to register on the sex offenders list,  but his leg would likely make a real difference,  taking 1 punt away per game and turning it into 3 points, and getting more high and short kick offs to pin teams inside their 25 to start drives from.

Jon Gruden reportedly made the call to release former Raiders P Marquette King due to "personality issues".
What those personality issues were is unclear. Oakland undoubtedly needed the relief in cap space, but this news sheds light on another reason the All-Pro was released. Former Raiders HC Jack Del Rio also grew tired of King's antics after he picked up consecutive personal foul penalties in 2016. King will still have several teams interested as he's consistently been among the league's best punters.
