Cousins Destined to sign with the Vikings?
#11
Yeah, it's all speculation, but it's based on the fact that the Vikings need a QB, Cousins is a QB and there is no better situation in football. It's not like it's far fetched. In fact, it's probably the most likely free agent match in football.

On Denver radio this morning, the Broncos "insider" spent last night talking to dozens of people in Indy (coaches, scouts, media, hangers on) and he said this morning that the buzz in town is if the Vikings WANT Cousins, he will be a Viking. That the Broncos cannot compete. Everyone here in Denver seems pretty convinced by that.

And so this begs the question: Do the Vikings want Cousins?

Do I? I still put him under a Sam/Ted/Sheldon combo, but his durability makes him very appealing right now. I will say this. It's nice, for once, to be a team free agents on both sides of the ball are drawn to.

Zimmer calling Sam's knee degenerative is pretty sobering...Not sure what that means in terms of Cousins being more or less likely to be a Viking.

why?  all the guy does is perform well playing on a marginal team. His numbers over the last 3 years have been better than we are accustom to.  Just enjoy the ride, with him, we are in every football game we play from now on
we were in pretty much every game with without him,  he will have his games where he shits the bed or the team doesnt show up around him... 30 million dollars isnt going to change his game or the team.  we didnt really lose games due to poor QB play and with his warts there is no guarantee that he will truly elevate the position.  Case would have likely threw for more yards if the Vikes didnt try to let the air out of the ball so early in contests where they got big leads.   a lot of cousins stats are playing from behind and throwing against soft defenses.   he will be coming to a new system,  past performance is no guarantee of future results for any of these guys, but especially the one that is coming to a new team.

Our QB play was putrid the last weeks of the season in key games, particularly the last 6 quarters. Nor Case or Teddy is the guy here, Sam if healthy is a real threat but if you sign him and his knee goes bust what do next year, go out and sign a FA QB (will any of next year’s QBs be as qualified as Cousins)?  Draft a QB?  If you are not into Cousins, then what’s the alternative and how is it better?  if you say Case, you’re not looking objectively at QB play.    BTW we did lose games due to poor QB play, Carolina and Detroit (7 points at home) in particular.

The guy has done nothing but produce for the last three years, with numbers that Vikings fans arent used to seeing consistently. Sure there is uncertainity of a player joining a new team, but when has a top level QB (consistent, not one game or one season wonders) made this move and it has been severely crippling to the team?  How could he come here, with DeFlippo, and Cook, and these WRs and not be better??  How?  To doubt that would be to doubt everyone outside of Kirk as well.

With him, we have a tough proven gun slinger, not a lucky hot QB with a limited ceiling. We saw what that ceiling was, it was shown in the playoffs and without that miracle play, we would all be calling for better QB play. Is Kirk going to throw more pics than Case did last year? probably, but he will also throw for more yards, more TDs and present this team with a greater chance to win.  When we want to get over that hump, you need a guy who is a damn good QB consistently and just needs the right team around him to get to that next level. Cousins can be that guy, you take a chance with him.

more turnovers also puts our D out there more which makes them more vulnerable.  you see greater chance to win,  i see greater opportunities for the opposing team.  Our D is good but not great and when they get over exposed in terms of being left out there to much they get beat.  if hes the guy they choose so be it,  but he is not  what I would want to be hitching my hopes and dreams to,  real franchise guys dont become available and even with the contract mess in DC and the snyder factor,  there are reasons that cousins is available.  if he was as great as those that blindly support him want to profess,  why arent there other teams with marginal QBs in the mix?  its pretty much the teams with no QBs,  or no decent QBs.   why wouldnt 2/3 of the league be making a run at the guy if he is better than what they have?

by the way,  did you notice the level of QB play dropped when the OL shuffle began... coincidence?  I think not!

Skodin, Cousins is hardly a gunslinger. Actually not that much better of a deep ball thrower than Case. Will hold the ball forever ala Case without the pocket movement skills. Terrible at times with defenders in his face.

But you rightly asked if not Kirk then who?

I hypothesized yesterday that all the smoke was covering a move by Rick to re-sign Sam & Teddy. Zimmer's comment about the degenerative knee shot holes in that theory. If they really wanted him why bad-mouth his health to the rest of the League? Belicheat might get away with that and still get good players, not Minnesota.

Can't go All In on Teddy since he's still not back to being fully healthy. No way Rick moves up to snag a QB in the Draft. How could he entrust this team to a Rookie?

Cousins isn't perfect. He's healthy. He's young. The team now has a stable of QB Whispers to help him grow.

And frankly, he's literally and figuratively the last man standing besides Case. And while they both have similar weaknesses, Kirk has more consistent production. If they sign him that will be why.

my question is cousins 10-12 million a year better than Case?  ( or Teddy and Sam?)

also seems odd that the team would be putting out negativity on Sam and Teddy if they didnt want to keep them.   Why lower the market for guys you dont want to keep?  The more they ultimately end up signing for some where else the better our compensatory picks will be.  I have to wonder if the negative talk on Teddy and Sam isnt a rope a dope or some kind of crazy negotiating tactic?

EDIT: especially coming from Zim, I have never heard a coach talk as little on injured players as Zim.

I think any team imterested in Sam will want to see all the medical records on him so they will know as much at Zimmer knows about his condition.  no point in hiding anything.

Yeah, this is all very strange. Are Rick and Mike trying to torpedo Sam's value so they can get him cheaper? Seems like a risky move that could backfire and make Sam mad enough to sign elsewhere.

And yes, Kirk is worth $10 million more because he's a legit Starter. I wouldn't give him $30. More like 26 with the typical outs. Or even a one year deal like he's purportedly asking for to see if the warts are covered up or exacerbated in Minnesota.

You know my stance on Case. He will never repeat that performance because teams had started to figure him out.  He's worth high end backup money, no more.

I dont think any of our 3 should get more than high end back up money with some serious incentives based on answering their questions.  Sam it would based on availability so incentives for starts,  Case...maybe based on completion percentages and team success with him starting,   Teddy a combination of starts and performance.  I would think we should be able to find 2 guys that are willing to bet on themselves enough to take a deal that could reward them with being the starting QB for this team.
