The San Francisco 49ers have set the market for the rest of the NFL’s quarterbacks.
On Thursday, the 49ers agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million deal with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who they acquired in a trade with the New England Patriots last year. The deal gives him the highest average annual salary in the NFL. That is, until the next QB signs.
Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins will hit the free agent market at the beginning of the year as long as the team doesn’t franchise tag him and look for a trade. They dealt for Alex Smith earlier this offseason and signed him to a deal worth a reported $94 million with $71 million guaranteed.
With Cousins squarely in his prime – and after three strong years as Washington’s starter – there’s a good chance someone will pony up top dollar. Garoppolo won all five of his starts last year and posted a 96.2 rating. Over the last three years, Cousins has a 97.5 rating.
The Minnesota Vikings are in the mix for Cousins. All three of their quarterbacks – Teddy Bridgewater, Case Keenum and Sam Bradford – are set to be free agents when the new league year begins. The question is not so much whether the Vikings could fit a huge contract for Cousins under their cap, but whether they would want to invest that much into him as their franchise QB.

I dunno, I've read all the arguments back and forth, and I'm probably wrong anyway, but I see Case and Kirk as being too close to call. Kirk 3 seasons over 4K yards, higher INT...but still I see relatively the same QB.
Brees will stay in NO
Rodgers won't opt out, and GB will blow their wad on him (fine by me)
leaves us with Bradford and Teddy both with durability questions, Case or Cousins (Have a feeling someone will overpay for Cousins) and we will be faced with the same problem now....
choosing between Teddy, Sam and Case
All season we've been holding our collective breathe waiting for Case to give us an excuse to sit him down......all the way to the title game.
my gut says ya gotta dance with who brought ya.

True...And while I cannot in good faith lay the root of our embarrassing demise in Philly solely at the feet of Case (cough, cough defense cough blew cough chunks) he did have a 73 QBR when the going got tough against The Saints and Eagles.
Thats a hard pause for me..For me the choice is Cousins. Will be fascinating to watch it play out the next month or 2. I dont envy our shiny new OC, Zimm or RS on this one.

I like Case and he deserved to keep playing throughout the playoffs. But he was exposed in the playoffs. It looked like (to me) that the rushers were making an effort to keep him in the pocket. He was the highest rated QB when throwing from outside the pocket.
When he has to stand in the pocket I think he does not see as much (obviously) and is prone to throwing some awful passes. At first I thought he was just trying to give his receivers a chance to make a play but when it is the playoffs, you have to be a but more cautious no?
I would not compare Kirk Cousins putting up the number he did for 3 straight years (with no running game really) to Case putting up 1 year. I cant do that.
If the Vikings want Cousins and they can remain in the ballpark with competing offers, he'll sign in Minnesota. I have no doubt about it. But we don't know if they are even interested. So many factors in play here for the QB decision and I believe that Sloter's upside might play into it, one way or the other.

The Philly game was terrible protection/line play/ injuries.. if I remember correctly we had to change players positions on the line due to injuries. Our line, which was a strength for us, (first time in a long time) fell apart at just the wrong time.
Our D let the saints back in... and Case won the game by trusting his reciever and making a great throw.
The pick 6 in Philly was into triple coverage and a guaranteed INT regardless of whether his arm was hit or not.
Cousins put up better numbers with a far more gimpy Line, no running game and no name WRs.
If ever Case was going to have a season where he would have eclipsed Kirk it should have been this year. Didn't happen. And that's concerning.

I sure as hell hope they aren't banking on Sloter's potential. I want a franchise QB now. Sloter is potential insurance, that is all. A good card to have in your pocket, but not worth betting on right now.

I think the FO may be high on him, but I seriously doubt he is playing into many scenarios at this point other than back up QB at best. if he can come out and replicate his efforts in the preseason against other teams #2s and maybe get some game action here or there in the regular season then I might think they would be ready to seriously consider him as part of the future.

Who's the franchise QB? See, that's the problem. There's no clear answer, which honestly isn't great....and might mean there isn't one. Not sure what 'banking' on his potential means, but if the organization feels good about him (Sloter), then he's part of the longer-term equation in some lesser way right now. Nobody is talking about starting the kid yet, he's got a lot to prove just to be considered a backup.
Who's worth 'betting on' is completely subjective, that's kind of the whole point. Any move will have risk, every choice has a downside potentially. As I've said before, I don't know what the answer is, but I'll go along with whomever the team decides to get behind.
