Will Eagles Keep Both QBs?
#1
Two weeks ago, I mentioned on a thread that Carson Wentz might feel some pressure if Nick Foles won the Super Bowl, and at least one person said something to the effect that I had no idea how great Wentz is if I thought there was any chance of QB controversy in Philadelphia.
OK, so maybe that's still the case....but is everyone still certain?
That team has a 29-year-old QB with a 3-1 playoff record and MVP award in the team's first Super Bowl victory ever in perfect current health. They also have a 25-year-old with excellent regular-season stats, but no playoff experience, coming off a torn ACL. Foles is under contract in 2018 for $7M, and Wentz is on his rookie deal through 2020.
They could keep both but I think there will be a lot of temptation to move one of the two. Foles will definitely walk as a FA in a year if they give the job back to Wentz. So what would either of these be worth in trade?
I actually think the Eagles may consider offers for Wentz. Yes, I know, "EVERYONE" is CERTAIN he is going to be a HOF QB. But think what they could get for him. The Browns might offer the 1st and 4th overall picks in this year's draft - and more - to get Wentz. Meanwhile, Foles is still younger than Kirk Cousins or Case Keenum, and he has the size and big arm scouts covet - but question about those two.
What do you think they should do? What would you do? Any chance it will have any impact on the Vikings' QB decision?

My take:
I think Wentz will be fine.  As good as Foles played, the offense for the Eagles was even more dominant with Carson.

Next season Carson is #1, and Foles is back holding the clipboard.

Foles played great; way better than anyone thought he could.  It's that Oline, playcalling, and defense that really makes Philly a very QB friendly team.

They won't trade Wentz. Ownership even referred to his as their franchise QB when receiving the Lombardi trophy.

Foles on the other hand will be interesting to follow over the off-season. He is on a team friendly deal which gives the Eagles a lot of options. First and foremost Carson's health will drive whether they can trade Foles or not. His value won't be higher and he does only have a single year remaining on his deal. There would definitely be outside interest if the Eagles made him available.

But on the other side, maybe they'll do right by Foles. The guy was going to retire before specifically signing with the Eagles. Its clear that system fit is very important for him to be successful and I wouldn't be so sure the Eagles would trade him if he asked to be kept around even if it were to be in a backup position.

I thought the story was he was going to retire 2 years ago and was only lured out of retirement to play for Reid in KC?  either way I dont see a 29 year old coming off a superbowl mvp not trying to financially maximize on his success.

He won't be able to financially maximize this upcoming season since he's under contract. That's where system fit and Foles desires play into it. He may have more value sitting as a backup for a year on a $5.5M deal vs. starting and coming back to earth. A QB's value is based on their last series of performances and time isn't always indicative of a decrease in value. Look at Mike Glennon for instance.

he is looking at 5.5 million and then a year older and a year removed from his career highlight he will get a chance at free agency.. or the iggles try to turn his performance into a mid round pick and he gets a nice extension and more guaranteed money going forward.  he will always get that back up money that he could get if he goes back to the bench in philly,  but he is likely to make much more if Philly were to trade him.

That's where I disagree. If he were traded he'd be betting on himself to perform to get himself a nice extension. Its the exact reason Jimmy Garapollo's agent was trying to get him to stay on the bench in San Francisco all of 2017.

dont you think if a team is going to trade for him they would want to try and work an extension prior to making the trade?  so lets say Wentz comes back next year and philly makes another deep run.... how much demand will there be for Foles then?   Not For Long right?  He will likely just see back up QB money with little guaranteed a year removed from actually doing anything of value IMO.

Every time someone says something to the effect that Foles' performance in the playoffs was a "product of the Eagles system" or "good fit with the QB-friendly system", I think: then is Wentz really that good? I'm not really trying to rip Wentz apart, but when we hear that Foles was in a perfect situation or something - and we are going to hear that a LOT now - doesn't it mean Wentz was also? Or that the right situation does not require a #1 overall pick to win?
The biggest criticism of Foles is going to essentially be that he didn't excel on Jeff Fisher's Rams team. Well...who did??
I doubt a trade of Wentz will happen but it would be fascinating if it did, in part because it would involve compensation on such a high level (maybe not Herschel Walker trade level, but close), and because seeing if Wentz played nearly as well in a different spot would be a great study of whether talent is more important than situation.
Good chance Eagles will play Wentz all through 2018 and if they make the playoffs, they will be talking about how a QB making his first start in the playoffs hurts their chances.

There's also the issue of some guys just wanting to play. They chose to be in the NFL to be football players and they love the game. Foles could take a cushy clipboard job behind Wentz and I wouldn't necessarily blame him. But, unless Carson goes down again, Foles won't be getting to play the game we all assume  he loves unless he's traded.
I have to say last night he sure played like he loves it, anyway.
