Hmm.  Not sure how I feel about this.  His age is starting to show,  how much more decline will we see in a year?   His leadership is irreplaceable, but we need to get better at CB depth.

I'm with you Jimmy, not sure that we don't need some fresher legs back there at this point. Wouldn't mind seeing Newman on the coaching staff though. XR, Waynes, Mac all have enough experience now to carry on in a post Newman world.

A lot of people propose he should join the coaching staff, but guys who want to coach are usually thinking about going in that direction before they are on their last legs. Newman obviously wants to play, not coach. Few of the great players, especially the "naturals" who ooze physical talent, become effective coaches. Reporters put out lots of stories about Newman as a mentor because it's an easy natural storyline given his age, and football players all learn to go along with everything that has a "team first" angle. But my hunch is that Newman is mostly concerned with his own play, not that of Waynes or Alexander.
I hope we only give him a contract that is, "Come to camp and you can compete, but we're looking for a 4th CB in FA & the draft", with no guaranteed money. But Zimmer errs on the side of loyalty..

Dunno, didn't see any issues this year.  He played part time at the nickel and i don't remember any glaring flaws.  You want more CB depth, well, Newman is quality depth and great to have on the team.

Based on what the younger players in that room say, I think your hunch is all spinal issues.

he gets beaten more than he should.  his game has fallen off the last couple years.  still a nice player, but as his skills continue to leave him,  his knowledge and experience will only go so far.

as far as him being a coach,  he has always been mentioned as a guy that Waynes and Rhodes have gone to for advice.  and I know that I read stories about him and Alexander working together on stuff.  Hes a good dude to have in the locker room no doubt.

Question, other than getting beat deep by Jefferys, what plays stand out?

nothing off the top of my head,   just like what plays did he make this year that stand out. I just remember at several occasions this year thinking that he is showing his age.

If we can keep signing him to 1-year, cap friendly deals I'm all for it. It's not like the team will avoid acquiring a corner if they like one because Newman's there. They'll just release him when he's not among the best 53.
