Alex Smith belongs at the top of the Vikings’ list of options at QB

Neither Alex Smith, Kirk Cousins or Drew Brees is coming to Minnesota. This is all the same smoke B.S. we get at this time of the year from around the NFL.

IMO, they are really looking hard at a Bradford-Sloter combo. Stefanski can put in place a very Shurmur-like, Bradford friendly offense: he saw it first hand the last 2 years. Just my personal theory, zero confirmation anywhere on this.
Completely agree...I've been thinking the same thing reference Bradford and Sloter for a while now.  It's just something Speilman is capable of wanting to do with the quarterback situation.

I know we have heard they are high on Sloter,  but until he has seen some real action against some real opponents that are actually going to play sunday football IMO its to early to be penciling him in as our #2.  If they indeed decide to stay with Bradford as the 1,  then I hope they are looking at bringing in another journeyman or drafting a high round pick that could possibly surprise and be able to take the #2.  The Sloter rumors are great,  but until he has shown more than being the best QB in Denvers 2017 preseaon  ( not sure but I think I could have been the best QB Denver had last year... :p ) ,  I hope Rick has a better contingency plan in place.

I expect that KC might try to trade Smith but this assumption that Mahomes is ready to play is quite generous.

The Chiefs made the playoffs and barely lost to the Titans thanks to a second half collapse.

The idea that they would want to turn the roster over to Mahomes and he will do better is something I would not want the Vikings to do next year.

Seems to me the Chiefs need to keep on winning most of all.

Worst case is Smith leaves in free agency after next season and they get a possible compensatory pick.

At the very least, they should hold out for a 1st round pick just like the Eagles got for Bradford.  Now maybe they only can get a 2nd round pick because he only has one year left on his deal.  But any team that trades for him always can use the franchise tag.

If I am the Chiefs, unless you are talking first round pick then forget about it.

Smith is 34 going into the last year of his contract.  if the Chiefs are really ready to move on,  they better take what they can get this year as they wont get shit for him in terms of a compensatory pick as I dont see him getting any big contract offers as a 35 year old free agent.

If Sloter has a decent preseason in 2018, why wouldn't they commit to him as a #2 possibly? They were about to do the same thing with Taylor Heinicke a few years back until he kicked the door in and slashed his tendon. He was just as unproven. Its not that far-fetched. I get that he has things to prove, to your point. I very much agree.

And like I said, this may not be AT ALL what the team is looking to do. But IMO, they should consider it.

Maybe you are right?  His age could play a factor for sure but we see older QBs doing well but they are the exception.

The real question is are they ready to turn over the offense to Mahomes and risk not making the playoffs?

Mahomes will struggle.  All young QBs do.  Maybe not a lot but it only takes a little to lose a game.

I just do not see them bailing on Smith unless they really need the 17 mil in cap space they get from cutting or trading him.

May as well keep him if all you can get is a 4th round pick.

Mahomes will likely struggle no matter when you turn the reigns over to him.  IMO they have a nice young team,  take their lumps now and if they really thing Pat is the future, by the time he is ready to really contribute,  they will have a damn nice team around him.   no point in riding Alex another year or two and then making the switch when the roster is at its peak only to be slowed by PMs learning curve IMO.@StickyBun said:

You don't make the trade up that KC made with its aging Defense just to pick a QB to sit on the bench for two years.

if he can earn it.. no issue,   i am hoping the team has learned though that they need to have a viable #2 established going into the OTAs and minicamps, Heineke had as many question marks as anybody and with him being limited/out last year that really forced the teams hand in going after Bradford.  No matter what player they take their will be question marks, I am just hoping that an unproven Sloter isnt the annointed #2,  that they bring somebody in for him to compete against.

I am at a loss as to when Sloter became this cant miss QB prospect.  Not saying any of you are making that statement but there are a lot of fans (on other sites) that believe the Vikings have this great young QB just waiting in the wings.

The dude has a good arm and athleticism.  But he is raw as heck after only throwing 320 passes in his entire collegiate career.

There is a ton of learning he needs to do about defenses and especially NFL defenses.

If he is the #2 and had to play then it is over.
