to interview George Edwards... Not saying theres any smoke there, but if anything were to happen, I wonder if there would be any interest in bringing Del Rio in for a DC job.

Given that Del Rio has been a DC and head coach (thought he was doing well) I don't see him accepting a junior level DC job. One would think he would want to call plays.

Del Rio is a pretty sharp DC. Seems like a guy that Zimmer would respect. I think he got burned out in JAX, and screwed by a dysfunctional weirdo in Oakland. Not sure Del Rio has the stomach for more in the HC world for a while, and might be a great fit back here in MN.

You're right that Zim would be unlikely to hand the play calling to just anyone. But there is more to it than that. Based on the teams current track record of brining in high profile coaches and showcasing them, this is becoming an attractive destination.

Look at Shurmur for example. He was the Eagles interim HC and considered a favorite for the job until they opted for outside blood in Peterson. Zimmer was able to convince him to not only come to MN, but to take a passing game coordinator position aside Norv Turner. Shurmur easily could have been an OC elsewhere but opted for this job. In hindsight I doubt he second guesses his decision since he has full autonomy with the offense and is one of the hottest HC candidates in the league.

Not to say that everyone would see the opportunity the same way (there are ego's), recently fired coordinators, HC's, etc.. could all see MN as their path back to relevance.

I agree that this is Zimmers show and he wasn't going to or isn't going to just hand over his play book for just anyone to call the plays.
I don't think that Edwards will be getting the head coaching job. The league knows that this is Zimmers baby and Edwards is along for the ride.

I would tend to agree, but also say its on the VERGE of being an attractive destination. What would solidify it would be settling on a QB. Not there yet. The organization has everything else going for it (stadium, new headquarters, solid staff, talented roster, etc.).

In terms of a coaching destination, as Geoff was refering, I would have to think it doesnt get any better. loaded roster and all the amenities... the team is still on the rise and as a coach you get to attach yourself to that which should keep your name in the headlines.

I think this is mostly for the offensive candidates, defensively the coaches really will never get any real credit since its Zims D, he designed it years ago, has been improving it along the way, and has been calling it for years. Zim wont hand off the play calling duties to just anybody and I seriously doubt he will bring in an outsider, no matter how accomplished, and relinquish those duties.

What I could see happening is, if Edwards is indeed lured away, then the DC duties would be offered to Grey or possibly Patterson. If Grey was given the DC duties that would open a door for Newman to retire and step right into coaching if he so desired. I cant really picture a better scenario than to be able to replace Edwards with guys already in the mix.
