btw— i just want to clarify something that has, I think, grown into a huge semantic problem.  There is a big difference between “entitlement”and “entitled.”  An entitlement is something one is entitled to —as in earned and deserving.  Being “entitled”has come to mean a feeling that one is owed something that has not been earned or deserving.  spoiled behavior.  Thus, “entitlements” like Social Security have been perverted into a definition that implies its some sort of gift we can no longer afford.  bullshit.

right.  but through usage we have come to confuse the last two definitions.   they are different.

I would simply point out that social security is a right to benefits - because we did in fact pay in for that benefit ... 1b. 

Compare and contrast social security vs. welfare, for instance.  One could argue welfare is different ... it falls into definiton 2 - a governmental program (that one does not pay for).

The welfare recipient falls into group 3 - they have the belief they are entitled.

ok. I would agree with that.  my only point is that too often people (especially politicians ) have taken the proper use of the word as it applies to say Social Security and made it sound like some kind of undeserved gift that a spoiled populous feels it is somehow owed.

Eh.  I have studied this issue as a CPA.  Back in the 90s, the rich people collecting didn't pay in.  

There should be two SS numbers.  The base number ... Calculated as a return on investment at the rate of inflation of payments paid in over life expectancy.

The second number would be a supplement ... That only the needy get.
