The title made me think it was a proposal to make the world series better... sadly my first thought was "how about if they play something besides baseball?"

strange minds think alike.  That was my thought as well.

Personally think proposing marriage is a personal thing.  Always thought these kind of things are way over the top, like he's just grasping for more attention or something.  Wasn't impressed at all.

Does it matter that we're talking among ourselves on a message board that surely no one involved will see?

Depends on what it means to them. Maybe they met at a baseball game? Maybe he wanted to make the most exciting day of his life about his wife instead of baseball? We don't know why he did it, but she seems happy, and that's what matters.
