A.J. McCarron - QB - Bengals

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Browns attempted to trade for Bengals No. 2 QB A.J. McCarron before Tuesday's deadline.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Bengals actually believed a deal was done, but that the Browns ended up not approving it with the league. It's the first we've heard of McCarron since August, where his name was a mainstay in trade rumors. The Browns are casting a wide net at quarterback, but continue to lack decisiveness as they search for an answer under center. McCarron is headed for restricted free agency next offseason.

A.J. McCarron - QB - Bengals

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Browns believed they completed their acquisition of A.J. McCarron from the Bengals before Tuesday's deadline, but that the league would not allow it to go through.

Schefter reports the Browns notified the NFL of the deal "moments too late," and that the league would not budge. ESPN Clevelad's Tony Grossi went as far as to report that the Browns were "celebrating" McCarron's acquisition and "forgot to call in the deal before the deadline." That seems a bit hard to believe, though we really want to. The Browns have lost control of their quarterback narrative, letting their rivals and media paint them as hapless in their pursuit of an answer under center.Related: Browns/Hapless/Factory of Sadness

Could it be McCarron called them and said NO to the factory of sadness?

Letting the media paint them as hapless? I don't think much painting is needed. The Browns are the factory of sadness afterall. What a mess.

This story may be changing. The Browns are saying the Bengals screwed up by sending in the wrong form - a form only Cinci had signed, instead of the form Cleveland had signed and sent to Cinci. I guess the Browns could have avoided that problem by sending their notice to the league office instead of to the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports there was a "disconnect" between the Browns' front office and coaching staff regarding Bengals QB A.J. McCarron.
Despite the disconnect, the Browns were ready to surrender second- and third-round picks for McCarron's services on Tuesday. The league office confirmed the deal was not confirmed because of a "paperwork issue." Truly unbelievable. The "disconnect" almost certainly stemmed from McCarron's ex-OC Hue Jackson overvaluing him in the eyes of the Browns' front office. Sashi Brown and Paul DePodesta are probably breathing a sigh of relief, while Jackson is likely fuming. The Browns' disastrous 1-23 record on Jackson's watch can hardly be laid at his feet, but it's seeming increasingly likely he won't be around to finish the (never-ending) rebuild.

AJ McCarron was going to cost more than Jimmy Garoppolo?? I think the Browns dodged a bullet by that "falling through".
