Vikings’ refusal to make long-term investment in Sam Bradford now makes sense
#1
The Vikings were willing to take a chance on Bradford’s knee when they were desperate in the days after Bridgewater crumpled to the turf, but they weren’t going to get stuck guaranteeing a large sum of money to a guy with a potential knee condition.
The entire situation with Bradford’s knee in the past couple of weeks has been shrouded in mystery. It’s a cartilage problem, no it’s a bone bruise. It’s possibly going to keep him out six weeks, no that was coach Mike Zimmer being flippant when he gave that estimate, unless it was a slip of the tongue by Zimmer on Sunday that general manager Rick Spielman told him to correct on Monday.
The latest is that Bradford’s knee isn’t improving, that he won’t play Sunday against Tampa Bay, meaning he will miss a second consecutive game, and that he will now see Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on his knee.
Bradford being sent to Dr. Andrews for a second opinion would call into question what Zimmer meant last Sunday when he said Bradford would be fine. Being sent to Andrews to get your knee checked, after the team doctors already have attempted to diagnose the problem, usually means the player is anything but fine.
Often it means that player is headed for surgery.
It also can mean that player’s long-term future with his present employer is anything but certain. The Vikings have been guilty in the past of mishandling situations and creating their own bad luck, but in this case it’s remarkable how bad luck has found them.

One of my biggest fears was to sign Sam long term. This is why

Too soon to make any definitive statements, especially since Sammy, Zimmer, Ricky, et al have simply refused to be honest and up front regarding not only the cause of the injury, but even WHAT the injury is.

One thing I DO know from personal experience : You typically NEVER get a 2nd opinion from a specialist if the initial diagnosis from YOUR doctor is positive. Just sayin'.

There is no way the vikings didn't negotiate an extension because they were clairvoyant or something.

I can't recall anyone stating Bradford earned a new contract off last year...the consensus was pretty much show me again...just another hatchet job by Dud...

It is starting to look like the first shoe of the worst case scenario is playing out: Bradford isn't going to be the long term solution. Our best hope is pinned to the blown up left knee of Bridgewater. Based on 50 years of following this team, I'm not going to expect a triumphant return to the field by Teddy.

If there's a silver lining in the potential/likely blown up season is we are heading into a watershed type year QB draft class. Never thought we'd be in position to grab one of the 5 or 6 potential first round QBs this class is likely to produce, but that seems more and more likely with this latest dismal news.

Would love to hear Sloter is tearing shit up running the scout team, Keenum gets benched for being ineffective, and Kyle comes in to salvage the season...I'm just not willing to bet against 5 decades of experience...at least the Cubs gave me a World Series win in my lifetime...

Lots of question marks now for Minnesota, both short and long term for QBs:

- Bradford's knee could be a chronic thing now. The forecast looks very shaky, unfortunately. Not sure how the team can commit long term with that knee.
- Can Teddy come all the way back? Minnesota will have to look at him much harder now as an option with the latest Bradford development
- Can Kyle Sloter be a factor in the mix in the next 2 years? Can he develop enough to be considered as an option? He's got the physical attributes, but so have other guys that have come and gone.

Mostly sunny skies have turned to cloudy with chance of rain at the current time.

I suspect news from Dr Andrews will be known by game time tomorrow or Monday.

Fingers crossed - but minimally this clouds the Vikings long-term QB solves.

Packer, Bear and Lions fans rejoice.
