Btw...only the top 51 salaries count against the cap. Right now, the lowest salary on the 51 salaries that count is Gavin Bartholomew at $939k. The Vikings have quite a few players right around the $1M mark. So...it's not really a $1.42M hit in cap space...it's more like a $420k cap space for Wentz and $300k for KM. Seems like pretty cheap insurance to me.
There's no doubt we'll sign at least another player or two in FA that are more expensive than the current 51 as well as the first 5 or 6 rounds of rookies. If we do, the cutoff is likely closer to $1.2M meaning Murray will cost nothing against the cap and Wentz will cost $120k against the cap. Are we really complaining about that for the security it brings?

Trading McCarthy Pre-draft saves us 6.9 mil on the cap next year.
Trading him this summer Saves 2.8 mil this year and 3.8 next year.
Something to keep in mind as it looks like we're shedding payroll for next year.

Wentz is 33 years old, he could be the Vikings back up for the next 4-5 years. I like the move because it creates competition, depth and options.
Furthermore if Murray and JJM flame out in 2026 Vikings will draft another QB in 2027, Wentz will be 34 and could help with the transition.
Injuries were part of it last year with JJM, but IMO it was in between his ears that turned KOC off. JJ was way too amped last year and beat himself mentally. I think KOC tried to guide him thru it and JJ didn't adjust and incorporate the coaching.
Now JJ gets to reset and go earn it. I still think he can do it. If he's got "it" the competition will bring it out of him.

If JJ is still with the team come September, local and National media are gonna go absolutely fucking nuclear when JJM is a healthy scratch and Wentz is QB2 for week 1.

Which is it, because both can’t be true? I don't think the Vikings are going to trade him. But they aren't going to trade him for a 3 or 4. Not enough to make it worthwhile. If Murray gets hurt, who better to take over? I'm one who still thinks JJ has a chance here.
They really have a pretty darn good QB room. I like the Wentz signing.

The facts are We have signed two QBs with a history of injuries. To expect that history not to repeat is dangerous. Signing Wentz makes complete sense then. The designations ( QB 1,2 or 3) is pretty fluid now and may change over the season. The situation is so uncommon that it’s just irrelevant who is called QB1 or 2 or 3. Let’s just let it play out— which may take way into the season.

Like I said earlier, if that has resulted in some sort of animosity between coach and QB, it's not hard to see a scenario where JJ is moved.
But I don't think Wentz has anything to do with it. We knew they were going to bring him back a month ago, and I think all of us thought at the time, "fine, but this is not the 'competition' QB." This is QB3. If there is no animosity, then this is much more about Brosmer than it is JJ.
Just saw Florio podcast where he said the Vikings signed Daniel Jones to the playoff roster in 2024 to possibly replace Darnold in the playoffs and that it was Daniel Jones that KOC really wanted to keep with Darnold being second. Also KOC, according to Florio's source, REALLY wanted to sign Aaron Rodgers after both Darnold and Jones signed elsewhere. In all THREE cases Kwesi nixed all three by first not even considering Rodgers and short arming the contracts to Darnold and Jones by making it clear JJ was the number one QB going into the 2025 season. Wow what a terrible hire the Wilfs did with the GM position. "As I understand it, O'Connell got overruled. He wanted to have Darnold or Jones or Aaron Rodgers, and he got overruled." Florio said. "They said no to Rodgers. Rodgers wanted to play for them last year, and they said no. They're sticking with JJ McCarthy. And Jones is really the one that I think gulled O'Connell the most, because I think they thought they had something special with Jones."

This is exactly what I believe happened!
KOC knew JJM wasn't ready yet and KAM f'ing forced it. This didnt do McCarthy any favors.
The whole KAM ending I believe was host of issues along with this; poor drafts, some infighting of sorts etc.
WTF is all I can say.
Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

Kwesi had 4 of the worst drafts in our history and totally mishandled the Darnold/Jones situation, however I think he without a doubt made the right move in not bringing the Rodgers circus here and will be grateful for him for that. Last year didn't work out, but I would much rather have spent the year seeing what we had in JJM than the sight of Rodgers in purple. Having to watch Favre in a Viking jersey still makes me want to vomit, would not have wanted to go through that again, rather go 0-17.
