College football is a mess on so many levels and this is just one of them, coaches shouldn't have to be in a position like this where they have to make a decision before the season is over.

It's LSU and I don't think it is even a discussion IMO

Because he hasn't pulled the pin yet...
I guess the sticking point is that he wants to stay at Ole Miss through the CFP and LSU is saying "for that kinda money, you're coming right now"

Then yah, let him coach through the playoff's. OXFORD, Miss. -- The Lane Kiffin saga is finally coming to an end. LSU is expected to hire Kiffin away from Ole Miss on Sunday, sources told ESPN. A source cautioned that Kiffin's deal with the Tigers was not signed as of late Saturday but added that it "would be a shock" if he didn't sign it. Should Kiffin agree to the contract, LSU will pay him around $12 million annually across seven seasons, with the potential for bonuses, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the sport, according to a source. Kiffin, 50, and the Rebels just wrapped up an 11-1 regular season with a 38-19 win over rival Mississippi State, all but assuring them a berth in the 12-team College Football Playoff. That said, the expectation among Ole Miss officials is that Kiffin will not coach the Rebels in the CFP, barring an unexpected change. Sources told ESPN that Kiffin will hold a 2 p.m. ET meeting Sunday with Ole Miss players, followed by an announcement about his future. The meeting originally was scheduled for mid-morning. After saying he would decide Saturday whether he'll coach at Ole Miss or LSU in 2026, Kiffin met with Rebels athletics director Keith Carter and chancellor Glenn Boyce for a couple of hours at the chancellor's home in Oxford. But the day came and went without an announcement. There was a growing sense at Ole Miss on Saturday that Kiffin might coach the Rebels in one more game if they clinched a spot in next week's SEC championship game in Atlanta. However, No. 10 Alabama's 27-20 victory at rival Auburn in Saturday night's Iron Bowl eliminated the Rebels. The Crimson Tide will play No. 4 Georgia for the SEC title. While Florida and LSU courted Kiffin, Carter and Boyce were adamant that he wouldn't be allowed to coach the Rebels in the CFP if Kiffin took a job with an SEC rival. Kiffin had lobbied the Ole Miss administrators to change their minds, but Carter and Boyce dug in their heels on that issue. Ole Miss doesn't want Kiffin around its players with the transfer portal opening on Jan. 2. The Rebels also don't want their CFP games to be a "commercial" for LSU's future under Kiffin. Even with Kiffin potentially leaving, the Rebels will probably still be in the mix to host a first-round CFP game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Dec. 19 or 20. espn

The LSU Tigers got what they wanted, hiring Lane Kiffin as their new coach on Sunday.
Kiffin did not get everything he wanted, however, and he will not be coaching Ole Miss for the remainder of the season as the Rebels eye a spot in the College Football Playoff. "After a lot of prayer and time spent with family, I made the difficult decision to accept the head coaching position at LSU," Kiffin said in a statement Sunday. His deal with LSU is for seven years and is worth approximately $12 million annually, with the potential for bonuses, a source told ESPN's Pete Thamel. That would make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the sport. Kiffin, 50, and the Rebels just wrapped up an 11-1 regular season with a 38-19 win over rival Mississippi State, all but assuring them a berth in the 12-team College Football Playoff. After saying he would decide Saturday whether he'll coach at Ole Miss or LSU in 2026, Kiffin met with Rebels athletics director Keith Carter and chancellor Glenn Boyce for a couple of hours at the chancellor's home in Oxford. He also sought the advice of former Alabama coach Nick Saban and Las Vegas Raiders coach Pete Carroll, his former boss at USC, over the past few weeks. "I was hoping to complete a historic six season run with this year's team by leading Ole Miss through the playoffs, capitalizing on the team's incredible success and their commitment to finish strong, and investing everything into a playoff run with guardrails in place to protect the program in any areas of concern," Kiffin said in his statement. "My request to do so was denied by Keith Carter despite the team also asking him to allow me to keep coaching them so they could better maintain their high level of performance. Unfortunately, that means Friday's Egg Bowl was my last game coaching the Rebels." Ole Miss defensive coordinator Pete Golding will "100%" be the Rebels' "permanent" head coach moving forward, a source told ESPN. Even with Kiffin leaving, the Rebels will probably still be in the mix to host a first-round CFP game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Dec. 19 or 20. Kiffin has guided the Rebels to a 55-19 record in his six seasons -- only Alabama (67-12) and Georgia (71-8) have more wins in the SEC since the start of the 2020 season. The Rebels have the eighth-most wins among power-conference teams during that stretch. ESPN
