JJ McCarthy
#61
I called it early and often, years ago: much of this fanbase, many of whom cry for a high-pick QB in every draft, don't have anything like the patience to watch one develop.

There's gonna be a lot of bumps in the road, and there can be "steps back" games...because, that's the rookie version of what's called a "bad game" for veterans.

Those bumps are somehow unforgiveable once a rookie has a few starts, but more often waved off with a veteran. It's backwards, except the basic understanding that humans have bad games/streaks.

The whole "the most popular player is the backup QB" bit is way too true. Calling for Brosmer to relieve an injured Wentz? Reasonable. Calling on him as a "start over" a handful of games into starting over with JJM?!? That's basically screaming that there's no acceptable development for a Vikings QB, many fans are too used to the team being the discarded veteran QB "last chance team".

My suggestion for the people that can't stand watching a kid fighting to grow into the player we've been clamoring for? NHL, NBA, Tiddlywink touneys if that can slow down the constant calls for the "next QB in line". Seriously, folks, spare yourselves and the rest of us....
We need JJM to season, ASAFP....

Brosmer is like Schrodinger's QB: until he actually plays in a NFL game, he's amazing to most and not to some. 'Open the box' and play him, and you'll effect that supposition.

I dont think anybody is saying Brosmer is the answer as much as we want to know what he has at some point,  especially if JJ continues to regress/ fails to improve.  its like at Christmas time,  you wanted and wanted this new toy you saw on tv,  but when you get it and find out that it was mostly hype and didnt do what you expected,  you check out your other gifts at some point.  it doesnt mean you throw away the first toy,  but you might set it down for a bit out of curiosity of the others.

And I do like Brosmer, I really do. I'm glad he's QB2.

I like what I saw from him in preseason,  curious if it translates to a real game.  I really question why the team is so high on him,  but yet failed to get him into any games or give him a bigger opportunity in preseason when they werent going to play JJM.

I liked what I saw in JJ in college,  hes not a wow QB,  but you dont need to be a wow QB to win in the NFL,  but you do need to be relatively accurate,  and above all else make good decisions, which he largely has done.  I think really the only issue with JJ right now is his damn lack of accuracy,  the cause is debatable as is whether its something he can fix with reps,  or something more involved.

I think they wanted to avoid any controversy when JJ came back.  Brosmer definitely should have been playing instead of wheeling out Wentz when he was injured, but I think they were afraid if he played well, that in a case like Sundays game, the fans would have been chanting for Brosmer to come in.

That's too cloak and dagger. Thinking Brosmer is better than JJ when he hasn't taken any snaps outside of preseason is a fan's fantasy. Trust me, if JJ tanks and Brosmer continues to grow and develop in a real way in the future, they'll make the switch. Max is a rookie UDFA, so everyone needs to slow their roll. The last time any QB UDFAs made any noise in the NFL, particularly Tony Romo and Kurt Warner, they had a league to cut their teeth on in NFL Europe. Brosmer is getting scout reps. Massive difference. Warren Moon had the CFL. Jeff Garcia: CFL.

quick edit: Max was getting scout reps, but with Wentz's injury he's getting QB2 reps which are better but still minimal.
