NFL Sunday Observations
#1
An interesting day of football, led really with inconsistent QB play. I think some rust needed to be knocked off for Week 1. Saw some good QBs throw some very bad passes. Not a ton of yards thrown for in wins and losses.
  • Green Bay basically dominated Detroit. That interior O-line is going to be a problem for the Lions. Goff got some garbage yards on a final drive or he'd have been under 200 yards thrown. Love had all day to throw, where was Aidan Hutchinson? The pass rush? Meathead looked lost.
  • Cleveland outgains the Bengals 2 to 1 in yardage, first downs and time of possession: and loses. Joe Burrow threw for a 113 yards. Didn't see any juggernaut in Cincinnati.
  • Bo Nix had a bad game, threw 2 INTS but should have had 2 more. Only reason Denver won is because they played a rookie in Cam Ward, who didn't look horrible.
  • New England had the same problems in their loss yesterday that they had all last year. Vrabel had Maye throw 46 times in their loss to the Raiders and his team isn't helping him. Not enough talent on that team by any stretch.
  • Not sure what Seattle was doing but they acted like Uncle Sammy was a new Iphone fresh out of the package: gently used. He was pedestrian for the most part and until one nice 40 yard throw on the last drive where he ultimately fumbled, he had 110 yards passing (finished with 150). The 49ers were there to be beaten with Purdy's really inconsistent game, throwing 2 horrible INTs and should have had another.
  • Atlanta snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, blowing what was a pretty nice game from Michael Penix. Mayfield was just ok until being clutch toward the end.
  • If I'm Houston, I have to be a little concerned about CJ Stroud. The Texans aren't clutch at all and a critical turnover toward the end allowed Stafford to be Stafford and hold on for the win.
  • Jaxson Dart will be starting for the Giants by the beginning of October.
  • Bryce Young: I just don't see it with him. If Carolina has a shit year IMO they take a QB in round 1. The media crowned him a 'comeback' player last year and that was just mediocre. 2 INTs and 154 yards passing with a 20.1 QBR rating yesterday....against Jacksonville. Gross.
  • ...which leads me to Trevor Lawrence. Not sure what to make of this guy. He was a 'generational' QB coming out, they said. Etienne had a killer game yesterday and Lawrence still looked 'meh'.
  • Josh Allen is amazing. He's come into his own. He's at the peak of his talent and abilities....and Buffalo put up with a LOT of inconsistencies the first 3 years of his career to get to this place because he was RAW.
  • Before anyone crowns Aaron Rodgers (too late), this take from ESPN I agree with: "I mean ... really? Yes, 34 points is great. But this was a long way from a playoff game, and the Steelers took advantage of some serious gifts. The Jets outgained them 394 yards to 271, committed seven penalties and produced the game's only turnover at a pivotal time. And the Steelers still needed a 60-yard field goal to win. Play that game in Buffalo, Baltimore or Kansas City in January, and you ain't winning it."

1 thing i was thinking about QBs looking MEH early on, ( I was thinking of JJMs less then great lone preseason appearance where he was not sharp with his ball placement) its equally likely that these poor showings by the QBs is as much as receivers not getting the depths on their routes or early/late out of breaks leading to the QB looking bad. I watched yesterday with the same mentality and give the QBs a little more slack as a result. All will get better in the next few weeks, some may even end up looking like pro quarterbacks.
Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?

A lot of weirdness in week one. Lightning delays everywhere, Philly looked bad, Detroit looked bad, Bengals looked bad. Flags everywhere, OCs that don't trust their QBs yet, good showings by rookies like Egbuka, JCM, Harvey, Sampson, Hunter, Tet. Every year it seems more and more rookies come into the NFL ready to contribute.

Based on what I saw yesterday, I think tonight we should expect penalties and a LOT of running for both teams.

....And don't forget Danny Dimes, nice debut.

Tough way to lose for Baltimore:

Cam doing his thing. But that INT he got was such a bad overthrow, lol. Tua can really suck so hard sometimes. DolphinNation MUST be ready to draft a young guy next Spring.

I think the Lions with new O and D coordinators and losing Pro-Bowl Center Frank Ragnow...those things were reason for concern in the Motor City but they no longer are suspect..they are real.

We need to just take care of business tonight and play this season one game at a time.

I'm happy for Dimes, hope he found a new, long-term home? The next Baker Mayfield?

How in the world did the Ravens lose that game? Eh King Henry?
Dont get me started on Hamilton again - ugh.

I'm not ready to crown GB anything, nor toss dirt on Lions grave...But there are reasons for optimism in Sconny and concern in Motown.

Will the Lions get better as the season progresses?
Is their SB window shut? I dont think its shut, but its not as open as a year ago.

Just handle bizness tonight Vikings - please?

Some good observations here.

Totally agree on Bryce Young.  The hype about his post-benching performance last season was way over done.  He's just not it.  Late in the game yesterday, team still has a sliver of a chance and he does nothing but check the ball down (and still got picked, though more on the receiver).  In other words, he gave up and the team sees it.  It's no way to lead a team.  The Panthers are likely a modicum better than the Saints, but suspect they will be shopping QB in the Spring.

Cam Ward looked like Caleb Williams 2.0.  His athleticism couldn't save him from NFL-caliber players.  When first read wasn't there he ran backwards and spun around and took big losses on sacks.  He might get there, but looked like a typical rookie QB.

Good observations and I agree with most everything that's been said. I'll eat crow on GB in another thread but that game aside, I watched a lot of a few others (I'm not a redzone guy) and have these takes-

PIT/NYJ- Rodgers looked a lot better than last year, that's for sure. Not like his old self by any stretch and PIT defense looked atrocious. Anything can happen but to me it looks like another middling but decent season for Tomlin and the Steelers.
Justin Fields looked solid and Breece Hall looked amazing. The team Jetsed it up late and lost but the offense was encouraging and leaps ahead of their ugly slog offense last season. The defense, not so much.

NYG/WAS- The Giants OL is a disaster. Wilson looked average or worse, but he has no time. If they value Dart, they will figure this out before they put him in. Washington looked decent; Deebo is not washed.

BUF/BAL- Two elite teams in a fun game. Both rosters are more loaded than the Chiefs, but both teams make a lot more costly gaffes than the Chiefs. Last year the Chiefs savvied their way to the Super Bowl, this year the talent disparity might be too wide for Reid and Mahomes to overcome.

But it's only week 1.
