New offenses for rookie QBs in Year 2/TC updates
#1
Both Drake Maye and Caleb Williams have to learn new offenses from their rookie years, that will take some time and probably curb a smidge of development for the sake of learning a new coordinator and offense. Its very early, but I'm reading that Williams is really struggling. While I do feel both teams made the right call in getting new head coaches, this is the kind of stuff that hurts young QBs. Patience is required and fans aren't wired that way today and the media doesn't care about that, the more drama they create, the more engagement they get. Twitter is the Wild West now where outright lying is the norm, which doesn't help when dealing with naive or unsophisticated fans online.

I still stand by my opinion that Nix, McCarthy and Penix will turn out in the aggregate to be better NFL QBs than Williams, Daniels and Maye. This is my long term projection of the first 3 QBs drafted compared to the next 3 in round one. Nix's ceiling is a little higher than I originally thought and he spent some time with Drew Brees this summer. They are calling next year's QB class incoming as very good, so we'll see how that shakes out next Spring as well. There's going to be a TON of comparisons by the national media postgame from the MNF affair between Minnesota and Chicago as far as the QBs go in that first game. Pressure for both guys, but that's life in the NFL.

Neat story on JJ's progress, the defense looks sharp and some surprising contributors this season on D: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6517609...takeaways/

Here's the pass I mentioned yesterday: middle of the field heater only the WRer can get, JJ plants and torques with that underrated fast release, right on the hands. He's bigger from the waist down this year, using that as a throwing platform like the good ones do.

In aggregate, I might agree.
Daniels brings the overall score of the second group (drafted earlier) up some.
I was high on Bo Nix during his last season at Oregon, and was pleased to see that he acquitted himself well in Denver last season...even improving as the season went on.
Related/not-related...Drew Brees has been increasing his real estate holdings here in this corner of Montana.  We drive by his acreage near the Lake (completely re-fenced, now he is running about 30 head of Angus on pasture, and a large home is under contruction).  He also bought a place nearby right on the lake, so he and the family have options.  He keeps a low public profile here though.

BTW, Mooch and Tom Izzo were both in town here last week.  'Tis the season.

Here to praise the idea that, if you can do it, get your offense and its coaches set before you draft your QB. If you hit on the QB, he will have 10 years in the same offense. That's Brady and Manning like continuity.

The NFL trash heap is stacked to the brim with QBs who were forced to learn new offenses every year.

Another fine point in this fine thread: we've been brutal in terms of continuity. KOC has managed to get that handled after the "OC revolving door" under Zimmer, but I still think the stability of the system (albeit with constant evolution) is something that has aided our primary rivals forever.

The pukers had consistency around both of most recent SB winners, and would replace departing coaches with others that still centered their offensive philosophy around the starting signal caller(s). During that same time, we had a slew of coaching, system, and even culture changes that scattered the team's focus. No shiny new QB, OC, WR, or even HC can quickly create a whole culture of excellence; it takes the time it takes.

Right now, even with some question marks around JJM, we're as stacked with players and coaches as we've been in my lifetime...perhaps even surpassing the '98 juggernaut. I've never been this impatient for Week 1.
Wishing a great season for the team, Especially Mundt and Kwenkeu! Big Grin

Right now I see Daniels, BIG step down to Nix , then everybody else...

Will be super interesting to see how the rankings/separartions materialize the next few seasons.

I'm just glad to be taking part in this QB derby.

Pads go on today, time for big-boy ball. Rooks better be ready, big day for Donovan Jackson and others.

That's how I feel: glad Minnesota snagged one from that class.

By the way, and not that this matters, but this throw was last year. You can see Johnny Mundt in the background and they're also in pads, which they haven't done yet. That Cam guy is a nuisance poster. I finally just blocked him.

This lines up with how I think teams should be thinking.
• Your HC should be offensive minded, just because poaching the main offensive guy is so damaging. I think maybe the Patriots have a loophole here, as McDaniels is borderline unhirable as a head coach, so he might not get poached. Coaching matters most in this league outside of maybe 1-2 QBs a generation. Coaches don’t count against the cap. Stack up as many great coaches as you can.
• When you have a chance to draft a potentially great QB, you should. The reward for hitting on the next Brady/Mahomes is so great that it outweighs any relative losses. There’s maybe 4 teams that shouldn’t draft a QB. You can go multiple years without having a viable shot at drafting a prospect that could potentially turn into an elite QB. If one is available, go get them. If you have a good QB, you can always trade one in 2 years after you know which one is better.
• You should always be building your offensive support system. You should always have a good OLine and good receiving targets. Whatever QB you have should not be limited by the players around them.
• Fuck the defense. Do the best you can, but it’s not important. Don’t mortgage your future by dumping a ton of resources into your defense until your offense is sorted out. Super Bowls are won by great QBs. While it’s theoretically possible to win a SB with a Foles or a Flacco, it’s a mathematically dumb strategy. You need to do your best to get your QB to grow into greatness. Once your offense is clicking push your chips in and start loading up on defense. I’m not saying be the bengals and just be bad on defense, I’m saying while rebuilding, build the offense first, worry about defense second.

The really stupid thing is that there is plenty of REAL good news about McCarthy. He doesn't have to make shit up.
