NFL All Quarter Century Team: A very good Viking showing

Thought it'd be fun to put together a Vikings All Quarter Century Team.  Here is my stab at it, going to do Offense first.  Got all of my stats from AI, so assuming some errors.  Only counting years from 2000, not full career with Vikings.

QB:  1) Daunte Culpepper 6 seasons, 24K pass yds, 149 TDs, 106 Ints, 2600 rush yards, 34 TDs, 3 probowls
       2) Kirk Cousins 6 seasons, 23K pass yds, 171 TDs, 55 Ints, 3 probowls
       3) Brett Favre 2 seasons

Tough call between Culpepper and Cousins.  Give the edge to Culpepper.  I think if Culpepper were around in todays game and had someone like KOC guiding him vs Tice, we'd be talking multiple superbowls.  With Favre, 2009 awesome year, but not enough years for me to put above Cousins and Culpepper.  I was a huge fan of Jeff George, loved his cannon arm, not his hustle though.

RB: 1) Adrian Peterson 10 seasons, 11.7K rush yds, 97 TDS, 232 rec, 2K rec yds, 5 TDS, 7 Probowls, 1 MVP
      2) Dalvin Cook 6 seasons, 6K yards, 43 TDs. 224 Rec, 1791 rec yds. 5 Tds, 4 PBs
      3) Chester Taylor 4 seasons, 4.7K yds, 26 TDs, 299 Rec, 2324 rec yds, 6 Tds

1st two are easy and no brainers.  AD definitely one of my favorites of all time. I loved Chester Taylor's game more than others (Michael Bennett, Mo Williams).  Lightening and Thunder with him and AD.  If Robert Smith didn't hang up his cleats so early, prob would have him at 3.

FB:  1) Jimmy Kleinsasser, 12 seasons, Vikings lifer
       2) CJ Ham, 8 seasons, 2 PB

Put Kleinsasser at FB, so I could get others at TE.  Loved Jimmy, Viking lifer!  CJ has been reliable and consistent for the Vikes.

WR: 1) Justin Jefferson 5 seasons, 495 rec, 7432 rec yds, 40 Tds, 4 PBs
       2) Randy Moss 6 seasons, 438rec, 6554 rec yds, 64TDs, 3 PBs
       3) Adam Thielen 9 seasons, 534rec, 6682rec Yds, 55TDs, 2 PBs
       4) Percy Harvin 4 seasons, 280 rec, 3302rec yds, 20TDs. 683 rushing yds, 4TDs, 5 KR TDs
       5) Stefon Diggs 5 seasons, 365 rec, 4623 rec yds, 30 TDs

Again first 2 are no brainers, but definitely debatable who is #1.  Never thought I'd put someone over Moss, but you have to love everything JJ does and not playing with the diva WR attitude. With this being a quarter century team, expect Jefferson to have another huge year and widen the statistical gap he has on Moss on yds/rec and tighten the TD gap.  Had to put Thielen at 3, he is Minnesota thru and thru!  Thought he'd be a Viking lifer, but unfortunately didn't work out.  Placed Harvin (one of my all time favs) and Diggs on the list, even with the headaches (pun intended) still tremendous players.  Wish Harvin had a Jefferson by his side, along with McCardell and KOC coaching him. 

LT:  1) Bryant McKinnie 9 seasons, 1 PB
      2) Christian Darrisaw 4 seasons

McKinnie was a solid guy for several years, still didn't live up to his potential.  Still consider him to be one of the top 10-15 LTs when he played.  Only reason I have McKinnie over Darrisaw is because of the number of seasons played.  Hoping Darrisaw can return back to his dominant level after the injury.  If Kalil could've lived up to his potential, would've been on this list.

LG:  1) Steve Hutchinson 6 seasons, 4PBs

Duh!! No one else considering in my opinion, just several fill ins.  LG has been tough for us to fill, hopefully Jackson changes that.  Hutch was a great FA add.

C:  1) Matt Birk 8 seasons, 6PBs
     2) John Sullivan, 7 seasons

One great one and another reliable one.  Wish we made would've made Birk a Viking lifer like Kleinsasser.  We had a nice streak of good/great C's, Christy before this, Lowdermilk, Tingelhoff.  Hopefully start again here with Kelly.

RG: 1) David Dixon  5 seasons and many more before this
      2) Anthony Herrera 7 seasons, Viking lifer.

Loved Dixon in the run game and barely missed any games.  Herrera had some decent years, key blocker for several years for AD.

RT:  1) Brian O'Neill, 7 seasons, 2PBs
       2) Phil Loadholt, 5 seasons
       
O'Neill has been very reliable.  Loadholt, key blocker along with Herrera for several years for AD.  Korey Stringer would definitely be on this list if he wasn't taken away from us way too early. RIP.

Other serviceable lineman: Joe Berger, Brandon Fusco, and Reilly Reiff

TE: 1) Kyle Rudolph 10 seasons, 453 rec, 4.5K rec yds, 48 TDs, 2PBs
      2) TJ Hockenson 3 seasons, 196 rec, 1.9K rec yds, 8 TDs
      3) Visanthe Shiancoe, 5 seasons, 208 rec, 2.4K rec yds, 24 TDs

Easily can have Kleinsasser on this list.  If Hockenson had more years, definitely would have him above Rudolph.  I think he's in line for a PB year.  Shiancoe was an nice TE, consistent 500 yd seasons.

Will do defense this weekend.

Would leave Favre off.  One great year with the typical ending.  2010 was horrible, didn't get to camp, learn the offense and wasn't bought in.

Your list shows the weakness at LG for sure.  Even RG has been rather barren.

Good list. Wouldn't change much. I might put Randy over Justin right now just for the unmatched impact he had on the game. One more season and Jefferson probably moves ahead for good. Might have Diggs over Harvin too. Who's the KR? Harvin or Patterson? Probably Patterson. Sherels no brainer for PR. K is just a series of nothings. Hopefully that changes with the babyfaced assassin. Punter's gotta be Kluwe.

I couldn't find much fault or significant areas to disagree...

I wouldnt be able to put J Jetta over Moss (yet) or Harvin over Diggs. As much as a Diva Diggs is to this day, I still have some luv for him from being at the Mpls Miracle.

While I think Diggs and Thielen are pretty clearly better than Harvin from a historical production standpoint. I think peak Harvin is who I would pick for my WR3 if I was trying to make an offense that competed against other teams, and I was limited to only those 3 WR, just because he offers a much different skillset that I think would be more valuable in an offense that already had Jefferson and Moss. Jefferson, Diggs and Thielen are all stress the defense in similar ways.

Continuation of Vikings All Quarter Century Team. Here is my stab at the defense.  Got all of my stats from AI, so assuming some errors.  Only counting years from 2000, not full career with Vikings.  Assuming a 4-3 defense.

DT: 1) Kevin Williams, 11 seasons, 60 sacks, 685 total tackles 6PBs
      2) Pat Williams, 6 seasons, 7.5 sacks, 672 total tackles 3PBs
      3) Linval Joseph, 6 seasons, 7.5 sacks, 244 total tackles 2PBs

Have to have the Williams Wall at 1 and 2.  One of the most dominating rushing defensive fronts ever.  Fat Pat has always been one of my favorites. Linval Joseph was a huge part of the 2017 Minnesota Miracle team. Sharrif Floyd looked very promising until knee injuries ended his career.

DE: 1) Jared Allen, 6 seasons, 85 sacks, 641 total tackles,  5 PBs
      2) Danielle Hunter 9 seasons, 87.5 sacks, 507 total tackles, 4PBs
      3) Everson Griffen, 11 seasons, 79.5 sacks, 403 total tackles, 4 PBs
      4) Brian Robison  11 seasons, 60 sacks, 287 total tackles, Viking Lifer!

Could make an argument that Hunter was the more well rounded player, but Allen's leadership and pass rushing skills nearly got us back to the Superbowl.  Also one of the most iconic sack celebrations ever.  Could argue Allen was our best player we ever acquired via a trade (Krause too).  Griffen and Robison were also great ends, reliable and consistent.  Thought about Ray Edwards, good player, but also benefitted playing alongside the Williams Wall and Allen.  Udeze had promise like Floyd, but had to cut his career short due to illness.

OLB:
          1) Chad Greenway, 11 seasons, 18 sacks, 1101 total tackles, 11 Ints, 2PBs, Viking Lifer!
          2) Anthony Barr, 9 seasons, 17.5 sacks, 495 total tackles, 5 Ints, 4PBs
          3) Ben Leber. 5 seasons, 9.5 sacks. 269 total tackles, 4 Ints

Barr was an incredible player, but I still feel he didn’t reach his full potential with his off the chart athleticism.  Every time I hear his name, think of his shot on Aaron to knock him out of the game and Aaron yapping/complaining as he goes to the sidelines. Greenway is definition of blue collar, had a knack for being around the ball (1000+ tackles!!) and loved by fans.  Leber another reliable LB, love his insights now as an analyst.

MLB: 1) Eric Kendricks, 8 seasons, 15 sacks, 919 total tackles, 9 Ints, 1PB
        2) EJ Henderson, 9 seasons, 15.5 sacks, 752 total tackles, 5 Ints, 1PB

Both had consistent production under their time here, but have to give the nod to Kendricks.  Henderson had a little more size and considered him more a thumper down the hill type of LB.  Kendricks was better in coverage and was always around the ball.  Still remember EJ breaking his femur and coming back from that, tough! 

CB  1) Antoine Winfield, 9 seasons, 737 total tackles, 6.5 sacks, 21 Ints, 74 passes defended, 3PBs
      2) Xavier Rhodes, 7 seasons, 457 total tackles, 13 Ints, 92 passes defended, 3 PBs
      3) Brian Williams, 9 seasons, 409 total tackles, 5 sacks, 19 ints, 75 passes defended
      4) Cedric Griffin, 7 seasons, 412 total tackles, 8 Ints, 74 passes defended
      5) Trae Waynes, 5 seasons, 259 total tackles, 7 Ints, 43 passes defended

Rhodes was a great player during his time in MN, but have to give the nod to Winfield (one of my all time favorites).  I think Rhodes was the better cover corner, but Winfield was always around the ball.  Cant think of a better tackling CB.  Winfield and Pat were 2 of our greatest FA adds ever.  Could argue that Winfield has been our best free agent add ever (Hutchison in discussion too).  Williams, Griffin, and Waynes were all good corners that stuck with the team for several years.  Patrick Peterson also had a couple of good years with MN.

S:  1) Harrison Smith, 13 seasons, 1126 total tackles, 20.5 sacks, 37 Ints, 96 passes defended, 6PBs
     2) Darren Sharper, 4 seasons, 250 total tackles, 18 Ints, 25 passes defended, 2PBs
     3) Corey Chavous, 4 seasons,  320 total tackles, 14 Ints, 30 passes defended, 1PB
     
#1 is a no brainer, holds several Vikings records.  Great leader, great player. Sharper was a ball hawk and one of our better FA signings.  Corey Chavous was a smart reliable player, had several good years with us.  Other players that I considered: Sendejo (9 seasons with us, ok player), Anthony Harris (future looked bright but cap casualty)  Cam Bynum (same, future looked bright, but Vikings decided to go a different direction)

K:  1) Ryan Longwell, 6 seasons, 86% FG, 98% Extra Point
     2) Blair Walsh, 5 seasons, 84% FG, 94.5% Extra Point, 1PB

Longwell was productive for several years.  Walsh’s rookie season was phenomenal, but the huge 27yd FG game winning miss against the Seahawks ruined his confidence and eventually his career. Carlson would probably be on the list if not for Zimmer.  Very impressive how Carlson was able to put that behind him and have the career that he has with the Raiders. 

P: 1) Chris Kluwe, 8 seasons, 44.4 yds/punt

Kluwe has several Vikings records.  We haven’t had a reliable punter since him. Don’t remember most.  Only punters I remember before putting this list together was Kluwe and Mitch Berger.

KR: 1) Cordarelle Patterson, 4 seasons, 30.4 KR avg, 5 TDs, 2PBs
      2) Percy Harvin, 4 seasons, 24.5 KR avg, 1 TD, 1PB

Both dynamic players.  Patterson was a threat to return it every time.  Arguably, second best kick returner ever after Hester.

PR: 1) Marcus Sherels, 8 seasons, 10.4 PR avg, 5TDs
      2) Mewelde Moore, 4 seasons, 10.4 PR avg, 2 TDs

Sherels was reliable and consistent.  Definitely was able to stick around as long as he did because of his return ability.  Mewelde Moore was one of my favorites, had to include him on this list.

HC:   1) KOC, 3 seasons, 1Coach of Year
        2) Zimmer, 8 seasons

Sure everyone was in the same boat with Zimmer at first.  Loved his old school tough guy, no nonsense approach.  Only works when you are winning though.  KOC seems like a very open minded relatable person, along with being a great teacher/motivator/communicator.  Hoping he continues on his upward trajectory.
