Spun another way, maybe Jones felt he'd gotten his fill of KO School of Quarterbacking. Or he just wanted more money. Or doesn't like the house he rented.

Our QB room isn't going to top any preseason rankings but I'm excited about where we're at.

Nope, but that's only because they're stupid. I've seen some of these QB rankings going into the season with JJ somewhere in the mid to late 20s. I get it, he's never taken a snap in the NFL, and I'm the first person to urge caution and patience with young QBs. But this is different. And I think those in the media declaring us 4th in the division, or JJ the worst QB in the division, are going to be embarrassed in 6 months. 

Like I said last year when we brought in Sam. You could bring in Zach Wilson to run this offense and still win 8 games. And it's even better now. Maybe even a lot better. Unless McCarthy is a complete bust of a QB—and given how he looked in the preseason and what the team has said about him, that seems very unlikely—Vikings are going to be very good and JJ is going to finish among the NFL's top 10 or 12 QBs.

I saw McCarthy ranked 9th overall on a Fantasy Football QB Rankings list. Different game and I understand why he'd get a bump by fantasy metrics, but it was still nice to see him getting some respect from someone. I think he's gonna have a great year for fantasy and a great year by "rookie" standards IRL.

That's interesting because I think I'd do the opposite. I tend to think McCarthy will be a good "real" QB. I think he'll be efficient and modestly productive. His surround should keep his mistakes down and he should win a lot of games. But I don't think he'll necessarily be a good "fantasy" QB, given that the team will likely run the ball more and not put too much on his plate. This team is loaded, so JJ could be playing with the lead a lot.

I think JJ's plate is going to be more full than many think. JMO.

I think he wanted a chance to compete for Qb1....Not sure that was really going to happen here for him.

I believe this is correct, although the KOC QB University for Rehabilitating NFL Failures had to be appealing.

I suspect there were multiple things in play here:
1) His best shot this year was as a backup to JJM, being realistic.  Even though it was positioned as an open competition, that graffiti was definitely on the wall.
2) He could have opted for the "being schooled" option for another year, but would have risked being pigeonholed as only a "veteran backup"
3) He saw an underperforming Richardson in Indy, and knew he felt strongly that he could beat him out and earn the starter job (and to think I was salivating at Richardson during the combine!  The Underwear Olympics is not the same as gametime pressure).
