This Darnold dilemma is so Vikings
#11
Letting him walk is the right thing to do. I mentioned this over four months ago and still believe it to be so. Tagging him is not only risky, causes many other financial gymnastics to be made to sign needed players and also a bad PR move. If they can’t sign him to be the QB (which I am not a fan of) then letting him walk is the right option.

Said it before and I’ll say it again. Multi year tradeable deal for Sammie and let the bidding begin for both our QB’s.

So start Dimes this year and then take on Richardson in 2026 and get a boatload of draft picks? Somebody's cooking in here! Wink

I hate to say it, but the most Vikings thing to do is this: Darnold moves on and is good not great on his next team. JJ looks awesome in training camp. Comes out firing on all cylinders. Vikings go 4-0. People are talking about Super Bowl, and hype. Game 5 against the whoever 1-3 team. McCarthy blows his left testicle out and is done for the season, and there is talk that it might be career ending. Hope evaporates as Jim Bob Cooter comes in as backup and leads the team to a very respectable 8-9 record throughout because, once again, everything but one important cog makes it through the season....

lol, I'd like to laugh harder at this but somehow this has some probability of reality to it in Vikingland. No catastrophe is too big or too weird to happen to our Vikings. I just continue to be stupefied by Ian Rappaport's story about keeping both Darnold and McCarthy and 'building the team around them' somehow by giving Uncle Sammy a huge chunk of the cap money for 2025.

I have seen this a few times now as well.  The part that I think they all seem to miss, is that while it might be fine in Vikings world, in what world is this beneficial to Darnold?  If he comes here for lets say 25 million, loses in training camp to JJ, he is back to square one.  He wins the starting job, and gets the hook mid season for JJ, he is back to square one.  Even if he comes here and has a good season, how much does it improve his stock for 2026?  The only logical way Darnold should ever consider coming back to the Vikings is if they were to trade McCarthy.  If that happened I would have to assume that was done because Kwesi has a death wish..

"With the Geno Smith trade opening a spot in Seattle, Sam Darnold is not expected to return to the #Vikings, who are now focused on other options they’ve been pursuing in recent weeks, sources tell The Insiders.
Those options include re-signing Daniel Jones, who is mulling multiple opportunities." - Tom P.

Tom P. has been hard selling 'Darnold remains with the Vikings' for the last six weeks. But *now* he's gonna really get us up to speed. Thanks Lucy, err, Tom.

Per NFL.com

It appears the Sam Darnold era in Minnesota will be a one-off.

Darnold is not expected to return to the Vikings, who are now focused on other quarterback options they've been pursuing in recent weeks, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo reported Saturday, per sources.

The Vikings' first-round pick J.J. McCarthy (knee) is expected to be cleared to practice this spring after missing his rookie season and could see his time coming in 2025, but Minnesota still wants to add a veteran, Pelissero reports.

Among those options for the Vikings is re-signing veteran Daniel Jones, who is mulling multiple opportunities including that with the Indianapolis Colts, per Rapoport and Pelissero. Aaron Rodgers, who remains under contract with the Jets, is considered a dark-horse candidate to land in Minnesota, per Rapoport.

It's the first development stemming from Geno Smith's trade from Seattle to Las Vegas, per Rapoport, Pelissero and Garafolo. With a starting QB spot now open, the Seahawks will turn their attention to Darnold, who will officially become a free agent when the new league year begins on March 12.

After signing a one-year deal with the Vikings, Darnold authored an incredible comeback story in 2024. The 28-year-old produced career highs in passing yards (4,319), touchdowns (39) and completion percentage (66.2) while leading the Vikings to a 14-3 record. However, Minnesota's success under Darnold came to a screeching halt in the playoffs as they fell to the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card Round as the NFC's No. 2 seed.

Darnold will now enter the open market with several teams looking to supplement a starting QB in free agency. He's the No. 4 overall player in Gregg Rosenthal's Top 101 NFL free agents of 2025 list
