It's overreaction week here after a loss.
Things I'll say that I'm confident in...
1) Darnold will NOT be tagged by us.
a) He'll get paid by some team this off-season.
b) He's earned at least a Baker-level contract (with 2025 bump so probably 35-40 mil per year).
c) His contract will be large enough figure into the comp pick formula.
2) Kevin O'Connell is a good coach.
a) He's going to get a long extension.
b) It will slot in behind McVay, Shanahan, Harbaugh, etc. until he wins some playoff games.
3) JJ McCarthy will be our starting QB next year barring some bizarro stuff happening. That was the plan and I don't see the Vikings deviating from it at this point. They love the kid.

He wont get $50M which will negate him giving us a comp pick. He's a high end backup. $10M/yr. Not a starter.

I dont see him getting the big deal that some had projected, I can see a 1 year bridge/prove it type deal for maybe lower 1/3 starter money, but I dont see anybody going multi year with guarantees and avg north of 35 like many were talking a couple weeks ago.
as the pressures of the season mounted, as the cameras pointed his way and the lights got brighter, his results got worse, he started taking more hits/sacks, his passes started sailing, he looked damn good for the first 1/3 of the season, but even though the wins continued to come, it was apparent that his game was struggling IMO.
Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?

I hope Dimes likes it here and stays for at least 2025. Not sure what kind of contract it will take?
They better have a plan to upgrade the running game, especially if JJM is the starter. It will up his chances of success x3 if they do.
I really believe Sam (at one time) had a chance to secure some kind of extension here. That's most likely gone.
With 14 wins, sniffing the #1 seed, the Vikings had me believing maybe they found a way to be elite this year. They are not.

Darnold and/or Jones will definitely garner a comp pick. QBs just make more money than other positions, and while you probably are only giving top tier players $20M plus a year, you wouldn’t blink twice if someone offered Darnold 3 years $100M, which would instantly put him in that top tier of players in the formula. Jones would probably make high backup money and that’s probably enough to get a lower pick back, although I imagine we’ll keep Jones.
I think the real question about comps is that we’ve got so much cap space that we’re probably pretty aggressive in FA, so we could negate a lot of our outgoing FA’s with our incoming FA’s.

Huh? The fact that he probably won't get $50M is irrelevant. He's a QB and QBs make a lot more than any other position, so he will definitely be a big factor in the comp pick formula. Even the 49ers got a comp pick for Darnold when he signed with the Vikings for only $10M. $10M is very very low for a QB, but it's very high for the rest of the positions. They all get thrown into the mix.
For example, even if he only gets $25M per, which would put him in Geno Smith territory, that would put him above the highest paid CB in the NFL. Even if he only gets $15M per, which is Gardner Minshew territory, that would put him above what we paid every one of the free agents we signed this year, including Greenard. What's more, the fact that Darnold started all year and was voted to the Pro Bowl factors in as well.
All that factors into how high the comp picks are. Whether we get one, two, three, or none is determined by how many FAs the Vikings will sign (a lot) vs. how many they will lose (a lot). So that's a little harder to predict.

I kind of view it like we are going to be in the same situation as last year comp pick wise. We have a QB who will get starter money that will likely slot into that 3rd or 4th round range of comp pick.
We also have a couple guys (Byron Murphy, Cam Bynum, Cam Robinson, maybe Aaron Jones) who are FAs who could command some bigger money deals from other teams further adding to the comp pick formula. If we re-sign those guys it doesn't negate any comp picks.
We'll certainly add a couple bigger money FAs just like we did this past off-season with Greenard, Van Ginkel, and Cashman.
We'll likely get at least one comp pick in 2026 from this off-season.

Agree with all of this. I think the last two games probably nixed the tag and trade option, but I do think there's still an outside chance of that with so many teams needing QBs and so few in the draft.
Off the top of my head: Steelers, Titans, Giants, Raiders, Jets, Browns, Saints...

This is why ya can't fully judge a new player until AFTER the season is complete.
yeah, Detroit exposed him big time. Of course Detroit also got away with mugging our WRs, but it rattled Darnold and he never recovered. Thankfully it cleared up any decision for the front office.

Here's what I know about comp picks: they are essentially early fourth rounders at best and most are later than that. This is not where teams make hay in the draft, especially teams that draft as poorly as we have lately.
Yes it's nice to get them but we also are expected to spend a lot in f.a. this off-season which will probably negate any comps that we get.
Folks get too worked up about the subject. These picks don't make or break teams, they are just slightly more valuable than Rick's yearly bonanza of 7th rounders that we all remember so fondly.
