Yahoo Sports: Vikings keeping Sam Darnold and J.J. McCarthy together in 2025...
#31
I wonder if Kwesi loses sleep over this QB conundrum. The fans view it as a "Champagne Problem." But, think about how difficult a decision this will be for him in the upcoming offseason. When he accepted the GM job he presented a plan to the Wilfs to fix the franchise. That plan included shedding the bloated contracts of our aging vets, drafting a QB & reaping the rewards of having that QB on a cheap contract. Now he's faced from pivoting away from the plan that he's implemented for the past 3 seasons.

If he chooses to tag Darnold or sign him to a short term contract, he'll lose the cap space that he counted on to improve the roster & won't have the draft picks to replace it.

I think thats a fair assessment...

Couple things come to mind for me:
  • Darnold and his agent could make this easy for KOC/KAM (depends on their contract demands.)
  • Tagging Darnold is about $41mm - it wont cripple the Vikings in FA. But it will certainly put a dent into how many tier 1 FA's they could sign.
  • Vikings are going to be a desirable destination for FA's. Culture, coaching, talent, facilities etc.

He is the future, just a matter of when

I think the only way Sam stays is with a tag. He is not going to get a multi-year contract here unless they win their next 4 games.

Of course I'm prone to being 100% wrong too.

I think a multi-year deal for Sam is actually possible. I wouldn't call it likely, but it's possible.

Sam has outplayed the tag, so it's hard to see that happening, but also possible I guess. It's also hard to see them just let a ridiculously talented and valuable 27-yo franchise QB get away for nothing.

The only other option is to just give him a 3 or 4 year deal. This is the only option that gives us Sam AND the possibility of adding several free agents in 2025 (by keeping his cap hit low the first year). Vikings might just want one more year of Sam to go for a(nother?) Super Bowl in 2025 and some peace of mind on McCarthy.

Yes, his cap hit would balloon in 2026, but I think the Vikings would likely trade him by then. At that point, after two years in this offense, his trade value could skyrocket. Last two major QB trades were as follows...

• The Seahawks traded 34-year-old Russell Wilson and a 2022 fourth-round draft pick to the Broncos for a 2022 first-round pick, a 2022 second-round pick, a 2022 fifth-round pick, a 2023 first-round pick, a 2023 second-round pick and three players: tight end Noah Fant, defensive lineman Shelby Harris and quarterback Drew Lock.

• Deshaun Watson was traded for first-round picks in 2022, 2023, and 2024 along with a 2023 third-rounder and 2022 and 2024 fourth-round selections. All this amid sexual harrassment allegations.

It begs the question: How much could the Vikings get for Sam? Further, how on earth could the Vikings pass up the opportunity to put this kind of draft capital under their new franchise QB?

Makes sense MB, a 3 or 4 year deal on Sam is such a HUGE PIVOT it would blow my mind...But yah, it doesnt mean you keep him for the term unless he is just a perennial All Pro.

Its up to the front office to do whats best for the franchise and just letting him walk seems incredibly inept.

Maybe we are living a Warner type situation in real time and dont know it yet???

Knowing the type of kid JJ McCarthy is... I don't think he'd make any waves whatsoever it we bring back Sam on the tag or a short multi-year deal.

He'll compete and be a good teammate. It would make an ideal situation to win now, but still have a young QB to groom. Heck, JJ may even win the job in training camp next year? Even if he doesn't, how nice would it be to have him as insurance if Sam got hurt or regressed?

It's looking more and more like we'll have Sam and JJ next year which is an ideal situation to be in.

This is and has been the best option (Behind the real best option, which was convince Sam to re-sign with us after like week 6). Good teams don't let good players get away for nothing. The only speck of bother around this amazing season we're having is the diminishing portion of fans ready to jettison Darnold for nothing. Heck, there were some people saying we should trade him before the deadline!

KAM is a good GM and Sam is not Case Keenum. I trust him and think Sam will be back, or at the very least tagged and traded.

Dungy is spot on imo...

If it does come down to Sam deciding between the big bucks in Minnesota and the REALLY big bucks somewhere else, he really need only look at what happened to the last guy who was faced with the same decision.

I don't blame Sam for whatever decision he makes, he's 27 years old and this will be his first true payday and getting the bag. Trevor Lawrence of all people is making $55 million.....who'd you rather have: Lawrence or Darnold? And why would I take less if I'm Sam? There are no parallels between Korko and Darnold, completely different situations for several reasons.
