BREAKING: Giants release QB Daniel Jones
#11
Adam Schefter, ESPN Senior WriterNov 23, 2024, 05:12 PM ET

Former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is expected to clear waivers Monday and have a new home on a one-year deal sooner rather than later, league sources told ESPN.

No team is expected to claim the balance of Jones' contract -- $11,833,333 for this season in addition to the $23 million in injury guarantees for after this season -- making him officially free to sign with another team after 4 p.m. ET on Monday.

Jones, who was officially waived Saturday by the Giants, is expected to have multiple options but likely will prefer to finish this season on a playoff-contending team, where he will be involved in big games, rather than going to a meandering quarterback-needy team not remotely in playoff contention, according to sources.

Multiple playoff-contending teams are likely to inquire about Jones and his level of interest, but it will not be long before Jones is finishing out the season somewhere other than New York.

Sounds like the Vikings are one of the favorites to land Jones, but is this a good idea? 2025 backup, yes. Practice squad, maybe. But as we head down the stretch, I'm not sure it's a good idea to replace Mullens with a guy who does not know the offense. For this season anyway, I'm sure this would have to be for QB3.

I find it hard to not see him end up in San Fran with the dings to Purdy and no real proven back up, but maybe they are happy.  I dont see the real fit for Minny,  unless he were to sign a multi year deal to be JJMs backup / backup plan for at least next year,  but it seems rather foolish on his part given the uncertainty around the league in both QBs and coaches for next year.
Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?

Schefter just pointed out that the team that signs Jones will probably get a comp pick if/when he leaves at the end of the season. Interesting incentive.

With only 3 picks, I can see the logic

Mullens has been great in spot work this year but if the team wanted to bring in Jones I don't think that'd be the worst thing. The comp pick angle is interesting.

Ultimately though I bet he'll sign with the Niners if Purdy is going to be out for weeks+. He'd be silly to pass up the opportunity to start and possibly rebuild some value, in favor of chasing a ring as a likely backup.

9'ers make some sense, just depends what his short-term and long-term goals are.

I dont know if some of the shine is off Purdy or not? But he and Dak both seem like they are in longer-term relationships with their teams as starters.

I keep hearing Minnesota and Baltimore are front runners, we'll see. Smart of Jones to want exposure to a well run franchise.
